Risk assessment....

Does the one in a million chance of needing the firearm, AND being able to use it effectively, outweigh the risk of carrying it around with the slight possibility of accidents, and the inconvenience of carrying and possible trouble from carrying in places where it isn't supposed to be allowed?

I don't think there are ANY situations that justify carrying rifles in public places like the people are doing who are wanting to make a statement. It's just not something that society expects to see. It will offend and scare far more people than will be impressed with the statement, and make a lot more enemies than friends. And...personally I'd be VERY uneasy with pinhead walking into a crowded store with a rifel on his shoulder when I or my family are in there, because I don't KNOW the guy. I don't have any idea how safe he is with the firearm. I've stopped hunting with a couple of guys who didn't exercise good muzzle control while in the field; I don't want to worry about muzzles accidentally pointing at me. I darned sure don't want to worry about it when I'm at the local Walmart.

Strap a handgun to your waist? Maybe in certain specific circumstances. Not as a matter of course.

Exactly ^^

But it seems the only guys/gals that carry are the ones that are ate up with it.

I mean a dude that brought his kids to my daughters birthday party had a .45 on his hip. Gimme a break!

There is a person in my extended family that has a hell of a gun collection. He was asked if he wanted to go coyote hunting and he said "sure". Then he realized that out of the 28 firearms he owned not a one of them was suitable to hunt coyotes with.

Every gun he owns is nothing but a device for shooting PEOPLE.

Makes me wonder how disappointed he is going to be if he never gets the chance.

If I owned 30 guns at least ONE of them would be a sweet varmint rifle.

jtram- You've lived this long without carrying a weapon, why do you need one now? Are you or your family in danger? If so, then stop going to dangerous places.

Tell you what. If I see some doofus packing open in a public spot, I'm leaving right then. Leave the grocery cart, leave the restaurant w/o paying, family picnic. Don't care if it is concealed. My kids won't be scared of the creepy gu

Just curious as to how common oc is around different areas. I keep 2 guns in my truck and have recently considered open carrying from time to time. Does anyone see it regularly? Opinions? (This could be interesting ;) )

Walmart and your local Texas Roadhouse are most likely not places that would be included in my "time to time".

I personally would rather see a doofer D packing a gun in a place I am than some wildeyed hillbilly or inner city rat with baggy jeans looking around like the hills have eyes. Seeing guns in public puts me at ease.

That guy obviously needs more guns then. ;)
