dtrs5kprs Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 They do a lot of graphing on the TVA lakes it seems. Those fish seem to gravitate to the off shore ledges post spawn and school up. I believe those lakes have quite a bit of current compared to what we have in our COE lakes. It is interesting that lately with some current being generated on TR, that guys are finding some good fishing off shore throwing deep cranks. It wouldn't hurt to be able to locate those fish on the depth finder. You know it. It never hurts to locate them on a graph. Not a big one on idling around just looking, but looking on the right kinds of places, or opportunistically looking while you fish...absolutely. Champ188 1
Members Eagle Eye Posted July 23, 2015 Members Posted July 23, 2015 My suggestion would be to buy a unit with as many key features that you can afford and that fits your style of fishing. Screen size, pixel count, power, side imaging and down imaging are all key factors in buying a new unit. But, I would not buy just yet. Wait and see what key features and pricepoints are coming for 2016. I think you'll be glad you waited. mixermarkb 1

That's an interesting first post but more info is needed to convince someone to wait 6+ months when they could be learning about something new.
Bgctrading Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I think I have decided on dual 999 but am looking for the bestdeal. Universal marine is 1200 and then has a 200 dollar rebate. Amazon is 1250 plus I can get 5 percent cash back on the discover this month and then the rebate. But if I wait for the 2016 models they might have deals on the 999 or something new and cool could be coming. Decisions decisions. The shopping and research is half of the fun.
Champ188 Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 That's an interesting first post but more info is needed to convince someone to wait 6+ months when they could be learning about something new. Brand new guy simply suggested that an option is to wait for the 2016 models. Maybe you wouldn't wait, but others might not mind making do with what they have until the new stuff is released in order to get what they want/need. At this point in the year, I for one would not need any convincing to wait. As for info, it's all available on the big wide world of internet. Why do you have to challenge everyone on everything they suggest? Is your electronics setup that much superior to ours? In fact, what is your setup?
5bites Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I've already said earlier that all I have is two 999's. Nothing special. At what point did I imply it was superior to anyone's? Do I know what everyone has? You are being a smart Alec for no reason dude. The irony of your challenging statement is that is exactly what you are doing. Look man. We disagree on a few things. It's ok. I'm sorry I'm one of the members not blindly tagging along. Now to the statement that I made to the person above. His was very vague and not helpful at all. New things are coming. Well ok that's a given. A new iPhone is coming out. Did anyone else know that? I did! Not news. The point is what is this new technology that is worth waiting for? It almost sounded salesmanish especially being a first post. Again some substance would have been nice. Now if your opinion is to wait wait I'm curious why? You don't need these right? You have intuition. Also back up and read who started the pissing match. This was headed back in a productive direction until you brought more wisdom and intuition again.
GNSfishing Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 I'd wait also because there are new things coming, Lowrance is introducing 3D to their Gen3 touch screens and then there's chirp for sonar and when the new models come out there is always price cuts and rebates. I myself use Lowrance units an HDS 7 Gen1 on the bow, an HDS 5 Gen1 in the console,& HDS 10 Gen2 with all of these units networked together gives me what I need in Sonar, DI, & SI on all units. I also monitor my fuel usage and fuel tank level along with water temp, outside temp on all 3 units. Could also hookup water pressure, engine temp and others by adding the sensors to the network. So bottom line it is really how much you want and/or have to spend for electronics on your boat. Of course there are naysayers out there about using electronics in their fishing and boat operations but it is nice to bring up a screen with your map and all of the other information on one screen if you want it. So whether you chose Lowrance, Humminbird, Garmin, Raymarine be your you get with each manufacture and ask questions about features offered on each unit. They all have their good points and less desirable points in their operation and future expansion. A unbiased opinion is worth it's weight in gold.....

Yes, we disagree on a few things. Likely more than a few. I can live with that. In this context, you think it's imperative to have every electronic bell and whistle available, and to spend a whole lot of time learning to use them. For me, the top priority is to spend more time learning the habits of the fish and developing intuition as to how to find an catch them in a given situation. Catch and release is worth arguing about. This is not. I'm done here. Got fish to catch and golf to play. Good luck Saturday at Grand.
Devan S. Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 For me, basic sonar and GPS. I spend a lot of time trolling in the spring and use the SI pretty often then. Champ188 1
fishinwrench Posted July 23, 2015 Posted July 23, 2015 Fishing toys are fun, no doubt about that. I just hate seeing people get it in their head that they need a 30k+ dollar boat loaded with all the latest electronics in order to be moderately successful. That just ain't so, and 5bites is gonna loose his cool when I say this, but.... All the guys I know that are all into this sonar crap in a big way can't ever fish worth a hoot. I guess they think learning the sonar ins/outs is gonna fix that, but so far it isn't working.
