What is the problem with kayak fisherman?

I AM NOT SURE I BELIEVE STORIES OF BOATERS BOTHERING KAYAKERS=IT MUST BE EXAGGERATED IF TRUE AT ALL=AS FAR AS THAT HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT ,IT IS TRUE  . MY WIFE AND I WERE BEHIND OUR HOME AT THE MOUTH OF ROARING RIVER IN A DENSE FOG..WE DUCKED BEHIND A DOCK AS 9 ADULT DRIVEN BOATS SPED UP THE RIVER ..THEY DID NOT SEE US..WE HEARD THEM ALL THE WAY AS WE ARE LESS THAN A MILE FROM THE MARINA THEY LAUNCHED AT..I TALKED TO ONE SKEETER BOAT LATER AND HE TOLD ME HE WAS THE DRIVER AND WENT WHERE KIDS WANTED AND HAD NO IMPUT IN THEIR FISHING..IT WAS DANGEROUS AND A POOR EXAMPLE

I find this topic a little ironic, I fish out a 20' bass boat most weekends although through the week when work permits I fish from shore. I have had nothing but good encounters with kyaks on the big lake. At lake Springfield and fellows kyakers for the most part are rude and inconsiderate of bank fisherman. I believe most don't paddle over your line on purpose, they just don't realize it.

It makes no difference who you are, what you're fishing from, what derby you may or may not be fishing, what the heck your silly jersey has on it or how many Power Poles you might have on your rig --- if you get to a spot and someone else is fishing there, in a kayak or a 40-foot cabin cruiser, you wave and move on to your next spot. We have people on the lake these days --- and elsewhere in public places --- that need to be placed on house arrest until they learn some dang manners.

There will always be a few inconsiderate people in all aspects of life, I have learned the quicker you you can overlook them and not let it get to you, the happier you'll be.

The day I let folks ruin my fishing is the day they win. I fish for enjoyment, relaxation, and a fish dinner.  Obnoxious or rude folks have no place in my circle of concern, whether they are in a bass boat, kayak, pontoon etc. or whatever.  Never let a day on the water be ruined by anyone, dont give them.that power.

Very well put hammer time, Wether the other person is just inconsiderate,  and or just unfriendly, or perhaps just having a bad day, something we don't know, don't let there actions affect you and your well spent time. Lord knows how much time we have here, live well and enjoy it as much as we can.

i have nothing against kayak fishermen. I see very few kayaks here on LOZ.  You would need a lot of guts to sally forth on LOZ at certain times in a Kayak. There are somethings I feel those who want to go forth in kayaks should know. 

Large boats and cruisers in spite of being up higher off the water have a large blind spot in their near forward view. 

I do not think there is a law against it ,but.a kayak has no business out on a lake after dark or in poor visibility situations. I have seen this a couple times. I can recall seeing one posted on here with a white stern light on it. I have personally had two experiences with kayaks at night.  One time with no lights what so ever and another time someone with red and green battery powered lights on the kayak. Even if you have bright enough and regulation lighting your still risking your life. There would be great confusion as your distance away at night on the water. 

i never worry about spots. I fish by the rules of right time, right place, and right way. Those things seem to be the holy grail that governs all spots. So unless I think it meets those rules I won't be there anyway. Besides most fishermen will be moving through the spot pretty quickly.

just letting you know, one of the kayak anglers who had an incident this weekend is a Stone County Fire Marshal and a very honest and humble person, so there maybe a little truth to his story...

 

I've some incidents where I had boats get a little to close for comfort. But I've had some idle right in front of me (instead of behind me) and have been tempted to toss a swimbait at the deck. Instead I put the rod up and go elsewhere, there's plenty of water to fish...

It is not about whether or not a kayak angler knows what is safe or not.  We all are very safety conscious in our community and I can speak for everyone of us that fish in our club or tournaments that a PFD is on at all times, if not then it is an automatic DQ in our tournaments.  It has become a norm for us because we know the risk if we fall out and can't get back in the kayak.  As for lights and at night, we do fish a lot at night.  When we do, we don't attempt to cross a large body of water and we have multiple lights (light pole, headlamp, flashlight, and flashing strobe is what I carry) and many of us carry air horns.  That is the beauty of a kayak we can carry it to a launch location if there is access available and we tend to fish the bank where we launch, lets remember we don't have a motor and the only time I am going to paddle across the main channel of Table Rock is when there is no wind, few boats, a I have a 4ft hi vis orange flag whip, and I can find the narrowest channel crossing point to get it done quickly.  The reason for bringing it up is when you have a bass boat come within 10ft of you in broad daylight and purposely throttles down in order to push a large wake and then throttles back up all while laughing, at that point it doesn't matter how safe the kayak angler is and what lights or flag he has on his yak, it comes down to a lack of respect and lack of safety practices for the boater.  I am not saying that is the majority (I appreciate all the positive comments) and I am not saying that all kayakers practice the safety that is needed while on a lake with large boats, but within our community, where safety is our number one concern, we have been subjected to this lack of respect by the minority being out in force this past month.

This is the best response yet. A jerk is a jerk is a jerk. I don't think boaters go out of their way to be rude to people in smaller vessels such as a kayak. The same idiot that swamps a kayak, is the same idiot that yells at someone for fishing his dock and who is the same idiot that takes up four parking spaces a launch ramp. They are just jerks and that is all there is to it. Plenty of inconsiderate people out there in kayaks, bass boats, bagging groceries, installing commercial refrigerators or calling shots as CEO's of fortune 500 companies. However, the majority of fisherman are good people. Just ignore the few who aren't.
