something else came to mind about brick and mortar stores.  going into bps is pretty much like going into wally world.  you can go in for a year and never have anyone help you with anything. the cabela's store at rogers, ar, almost always has someone meet you and see how they can help you find anything before you get too far into the store.  i do not mind paying more for an item when you get personal service, and the person that is waiting on you actually know something about the products.

when i have to basically wait on myself, i can do that on-line, or the store had better have some better pricing to go with the lack of service.  we had an auto parts store for over 30 years, and no one got very far through the door without at least being greeted and acknowledged and told they would be waited on just as soon as someone was free to help them.  true customer service is what a true brick and mortar store should be about.  self- service just does not count for one, at least for me.  just my opinion.

Bo, you have a great point there.  You get the occasional knowledgeable employee at BPS, and the Springfield store does better than a lot of the satellite stores.  I've been to at least 6 or 8 Cabela's around the country, and even more BPS's, and the level of knowledge and service isn't comparable in my opinion.

I also think that Cabela's does a better job with their everyday pricing and running enticing sales on relevant products.  Where they fall short is the marketing dollars/prowess that BPS spends/has.

Interesting thoughts. I go to Cabela's out of habit, and because it's about 10-15 minutes closer. They do seem to have a lot of staff around to help, but it's so rare that I'm in BPS I couldn't compare. Cabela's margins are shrinking, and they have announced an effort to cut costs. We all know how they'll do that. But I really only go there when I need something today, otherwise I'll shop online. It's hit-or-miss trying to find sized items in the stores, but online they'll have everything.

The BPS in Springfield has a lot of people willing to help. Unfortunately most of them are unable to help. It's a knowledge issue. A couple of years ago I was in the fly shop at BPS around Christmas. The lad that was manning the fly shop that night was trying to help out this beautiful lady pick out a new pack for her boyfriend. You could immediately tell that the employee had no idea what a chest pack or sling pack was used for. She was gorgeous, he was nervous. He was way in over his head. Yes I could have helped. But it was more entertaining to watch. But when they were trying to put the chest pack on her for whatever reason and he had her step into the straps, I bolted. I couldn't take it anymore. I'm not sure if she was going to ride it or what. I might have missed part of their conversation so who knows.

Here in St Louis we have the BPS in St Charles and Cabela's is just 8 miles away in Hazelwood. Hard to imagine they would keep both of them open. And this Thursday we will have a new Gander Mountain store opening in Chesterfield. Might have to check that place out since i have never been to one.

Sorry you have such a bad experience.

I usually do some research on what it is I want to buy before he ever go to the store. That way I don't have to try to rely on somebody else's experience or lack  on what it is I want. By the time I walk through the door my mind is about 90% made up on whether I want to purchase it or not.

I've been to that Cabelas store in Rogers a few times. Maybe the person that asks if they can help me is always on break when I go in there. Only person that to speaks me is one at the front door trying to hock the credit card.

well, chief, while you were doing all of your research, with a couple of clicks of the mouse, it could have been on the way, and you would save the gas money for the trip, and put less carbons in the air, but then again, it is just nice to get out of the house:lol:

Hey that's pretty funny until you realize the carbon footprint to get it to your door.
