waterpossum Posted December 17, 2015 Posted December 17, 2015 Thanks to Mitch and all others for the input.
dan hufferd Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 I tie in a 10' leader to braid with a double uni knot, I use 8lb green P line mono on the creek, and 12lb fluoro on the lake. For me it is the best of both. The braid seems to last forever, and I can bite the leader and tie on all day. If I do brake off to the braid it takes me 2 minutes to tie a uni knot and bang I have a brand new 10' leader again. I can also buy the more expensive leader material and not feel to bad about it as I am only using 10' at a time. I get no stretch and it's easy to tie. blacknoseddace and mjk86 2
Walcrabass Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 To All, I am using Bass Pro XPS Fluorocarbon in the 14 pound stuff. I use this with Deep Suspending Jerk Baits. I have actually tied it on hooks and tested it on scales and the break point is always in the 14 pound range. If I tie a pretty knot and wet it down good it usually exceeds it. As far as it helping the Jerk Baits to sink yes I believe it does. Hope none of this makes me an "out" or an "incast". Not trying to "Create" or "Draw" fire from anyone. Just what I have found myself. Might also say I have not used every FLuorocarbon on the market. Just a few recommended by fishing friends. After all it is expensive stuff. Walcrabass
fishinwrench Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 II wasn't firing on ya, bro. Just trying to get to the bottom of this rapidly sinking flourocarbon myth that I keep hearing/reading about over and over. I started experimenting with that as soon as flourocarbon became available. I love it for it's abrasion resistance but I'm just blown away by the number of times the sink rate of it is mentioned because In my experience that has turned out to be a characteristic not anywhere noticable enough to even consider. If I seem cranky about it that's because I WISH it were true to a greater degree. I would love to have a strong, castable line that would actually sink like so many people act like flouro does. Hell, a wet feather will sink too....but not anytime soon. Certainly not in the time frame between two casts. Take a wad of wet monofilament and hold it underwater at an arms length, let go of it down there and let me know when it comes to the surface. Hammer time 1
Smalls21 Posted December 18, 2015 Posted December 18, 2015 i appreciate the advice and your opinion on this. It just amazes me how big of a difference there is between this forum and the table rock forum. straw hat and Hammer time 2
Walcrabass Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 SMalls21, Fishinwrench, and others, Ok, now you have got my wheels really turning and I am asking myself questions. I am going to do some more critical research on this to find if my "observations" have been correct or not. I am very curious as to what the people on the Table Rock forum would have to say as I am unfamiliar with this site. Clue me in as I am always in a "Learning Mode". Wally
fishinwrench Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 While you're at it will you do some Stretch tests also? My flouro has just as much stretch at 40' as Trilene XT does. Then maybe if all our dreams aren't crushed beyond repair we can investigate the invisibility of it. The abrasion resistance thing is real tho, promise.
Ham Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Get as freaky with the details as you want to Wally. There are real differences between the different fluorocarbon lines on the market. I have direct experience with three as a main fishing line and a few others as leader material. FOR ME, I'm going to use Seaguar Abras X on my baitcasters. I started with Seaguar Inviz X which had less body, but not enough abrasion resistance. I have also used and been happy with the Berkley 100% Fluro. Very supple and plenty of abrasion resistant. I use it in 10 lb for jerkbaits. BUT, better fishermen than me, swear by the Invis X in light pound test on spinning. Is 6 lb test and I know folks that have had bad experiences with the Abraz X and the Berkley 100%. All those experiences are anecdotal and not scientific, but still valid in my mind. I'm trying to say, fishing preferences are very subjective and very difficult to scientifically measure, but valid none the less. as an aside, great sale on Seaguar at Tackle Warehouse right now. If you were wanting to try a different flurocarbon. grizwilson and Mitch f 2 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Walcrabass Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 OK, So now this gets even more interesting.... I can see that there is going to be some small differences that might make some large differences. I think it is cool that Fishnwrench has already done some research on the stretch thing. I have had the observation that the Trilene XT is pretty tough and " stretchless stuff" too. I use the Trilene XL and XT in Fluorescent for my night fishing. 20 pound XT is formidable line !!! I remember from yesteryear that I used some line called Maxima. Don't know if it is still made or not. I am thinking that 17 pound Maxima was probably good enough for a replacement ski rope..... really tough stuff. Just my eyeballs.... and maybe the fishes.... but I do believe FLuoro is more invisible in the water. As I have said before, My daytime "slow: fishing lures I believe are more productive with it than mono. And so.... back to the drawing board.... or maybe research board. Wally
Mitch f Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I always take away the cost factor of line, because I don't fish that much, so I use what I consider to be the best for me. I will never fish braid unless I'm forced to, for me too many problems. I only use 2 lines anymore. Based on what Wrench said, and my own observations, I only need one. I would use Trilene XL on my topwaters, and Yozuri on everything else. I'll probably use Yozuri on everything now for a while, to see if it adversely affects my topwaters. I've heard many guys say they can retie leaders in 20 seconds, I've never seen it actually happen. The amount of time wasted jacking with equipment, really takes time out of the fishing time, which for me is a premium. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
