Sad that you actually believe your opinion is "hard cold facts". You know absolutely nothing about mental illness, sir, and compound your ignorance with your macho so called "facts". Depression never existed before psychologists??? And if you can't overcome depression, you are weak??? It is thinking like yours that has resulted in mental illness being overlooked, underfunded, untreated, underinsured, and often ignored. I pray mental illness never touches your family, or maybe you can just toughen them up!!

Having lost a family member to suicide, I don't find your flippant remarks funny.

FYI some causes of depression (other than unable to toughen up in your opinion), biochemical imbalances where neurotransmitters in the brain that affect happiness and pleasure are not functioning properly. The hippocampus in many people who suffer from depression is smaller than normal. Hormonal imbalances due to childbirth, menopause, and thyroid disorders. Post traumatic stress disorder ( you probably think our soldiers coming home just need to be tougher.) Bipolar disorder. Severe head trauma. Heredity is a known cause. And while situational problems and stress in everyday life can certainly lead to depression in some people, there are a whole list of causes other than someone going thru a tough stretch in life.

I don't know all there is to know about mental illness, but I do know enough to know that it is beyond some people's control, and has nothing to do with how mentally tough a person is in their life. We all go thru some physical illnesses in our lives, some serious that require a doctor's help and some not so serious that don't. Why is it so hard for some people to understand that mental illness is the same. Not all people are capable of fixing themselves. As Sigmund Freud said, "If man had the ability to psychoanalyze himself, there would be no mental illness". But we do not have that ability.

Dude I'm not disagreeing that there are some people out there with genuine mental disabilities.   What I'm saying is that I find it rediculis that in every neighborhood across America there is at least 10 households with antidepressant meds in the medicine cabinet.     C'mon now!

And for every ten people taking pain medication, maybe one or two of them actually need it.  Lots of stuff is over prescribed or overused.  That doesn't make the underlying condition that those things are meant to treat any less valid.  I have a 63 y/o family member suffering from severe depression right now for "no reason" and it has all but ruined his extremely successful life.  It's one of the hardest things I've ever had to watch and I feel powerless to help.

And here you are recognizing people with "genuine mental disabilities" yet at the same time condemning folks with a different sexual orientation or gender identification - something that is equally genuine and something that they didn't choose.  The folks who use analogies of peeping or recording in bathrooms, or indicate that this whole bathroom stuff is going to lead to sexual abuse are just fear mongering and dodging the issue.  If you (not you here Wrench...more categorical) don't want to walk a mile in someone else's shoes or don't want to try and learn what it might be like for that person to get by from day to day then so be it.  Pedophilia and sexual orientation have absolutely nothing to do with one another.  A homosexual is no more likely to be a sexual predator than a heterosexual.  The most likely sexual abuser is a family member.

I genuinely wish that folks would be honest about this stuff and stop parsing together BS excuses for where they stand.  If folks with unconventional gender identities or sexual orientations that are different from your own creep you out and you don't want to be around them, then just own your prejudice and say so.

Wait a minute.  If you're a male that wants to be a female, but your not homosexual, then what are you?   A male lesbian?   How can that work?

Gender identity and sexual orientation have nothing to do with one another.  That's a hard one to swallow, but that's the way it is.  There are plenty of transgendered folks who are attracted to members of their opposite genetic sex.  I don't know enough about it to say whether it's the minority or the majority, but I do know that it's not uncommon at all.  Transgendered folks don't want gender reassignment so they can "stop being homosexual."  The gender that a person naturally identifies with and the sex to whom that person is attracted have absolutely nothing to do with one another.

Mark--Wrench is not anti handicapped. I have known him a long time and  I have what is  a life limiting handicap. He is one of the few people in this community that accepts  me for what I am.

Around here in areas due to poverty you find a lot of truly depressed people and a lot of people that do not even try to improve themselves and prefer the dole. It is the same  situation you  will find  in black communities. I think wrench is  saying a  lot of people are using the drugs as a  excuse. That is what i believe his point is. I know very well he would  support a effort to upgrades the live of these people. But our governent and politics cannot cope with. Weeding out  those who need and those who do not.

We are taught God created all men equal. The meaning being anyone can get ahead. It is not true and GOD never said such a thing. BY the way whoever started that did not include women. This nation is so full of wide gaps to fall through it is beyond belief.

I guess I have missed the entire point of the gender/identity whatever associated with bathrooms.  I suspect that at least 99% of people who are genetically male but identify (and dress and act) female and use a womens restroom do with with no one ever being the wiser.  I have seen a few folks in mens rooms over the years that were a little questionable but if they were at the urinal I figured they must be male, if they were in a stall, all I ever saw was feet.  We are about to elect one of two people whom no one really trusts, and folks are focused on whether the person in the stall next to us has XX or XY chromosomes.  I firmly believe if you have XX you are female, XY and you are male, genetically that doesn't change, but for the life of me I just can't understand all the hoopla surrounding it, as the Worlds Super Power we have sunk to worrying about who is using which toilet.  If there are problems, address them as they happen, don't make legislation that is just stupid, we have enough stupid legislation.
