Guest Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 I got in a rare float trip on saturday. The river was low & slow with water clarity of bottle water. I hoped the leaves were piled up on the banks to provide cover, but its still too early. I anticipated these conditions & decided to drop shot live bait (something I've never done) I knew the bass would be spooky & suspended so the DS made sense. Sure, enough my first drop next to a deep logjam yielded a fat kentucky. 5 drops later, I was rapidly running out of night crawlers. I switched to a robo worm & continued getting bites on every other drop. About 30 minutes later, the bite died (or I sore lipped the entire group) I left the deep logjam & started down a steep bank. I could see the bottom in 10-12ft of water & the shallows were void of fish. I fished along with very few bites & decided to switch baits. I had a bag of Mitch F. "3D craws" (I'm not sure what he calls them exactly, so feel free to correct me) I have the green pumpkin/orange threaded on his 5/16oz football head. On the very first cast, I watched a largemouth dart out from under a deep boulder & "flash" on the Craw. My line jumped & I set the hook hard. This was my biggest fish of the day. What's impressive is the fish weren't really cooperating at this point & that fish was super aggressive. The craw was falling & never hit the bottom before it found its way into the fishes mouth. Mitch told me to fish them so slow that it was like live bait. That wasn't the case on saturday. They wanted the Craw on the drop & they wanted it bad. I kept fishing along that do-nothing rocky bank unitl I saw a big log. As soon as I pitched the craw next to the trunk, another chunky largemouth raced out & inhaled the bait. It was another 16" largemouth that was fat & happy. Later on, I missed 3 more good ones because they hit it so fast that I didn't know they had the bait. I literally led them to the boat like a dog on a leash & missed them when I tried to set the hook close to the kayak. It was a textbook "hit & run" bite. By this time it was starting to get dark & i had a whopper plopper ready. So, I caught 3 more really small kentuckies on the WP & called it a day. 2 things happened for the 1st time: I caught bass drop shotting night crawlers & I caught bass on Mitch 3D craw. It's a good way to start out the fall/winter season & I look forward to fishing these baits at other fisheries. Again, I wanted to compliment Mitch on a very well designed bait that's very durable & super life like. Those craws will always be in my box going forward.
