Plastic_worm Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Quick trip to SELA over the weekend paid off with some quality redfish on the fly. The power of these fish is amazing and a great experience from a kayak. Johnsfolly Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 That was a great read and I always like your photo essay. How far is your drive to SE LA? I drive a lot to get to many of my favorite trout streams. Just wanted to get a bearing on the miles you are putting it to get on those reds. Also to you what really constitutes a true bull red? Thanks man. I'm 8 miles from the LA border above Monroe, LA. It takes me about 6 hours to get to the marsh. My idea of a bull is mid 30's. However the slot is 16-27 inches, so anything over 27 inches is technically a bull red, in LA game and fish terminology. However, on this trip I was looking for something around 35"s. Johnsfolly Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Thanks for the information. That is definitely a big fish. Congrats again. Also you're definitely a road warrior going after those fish. When I head to SW MO to fish Crane creek or Roaring river I will typically put in 600+ miles over the weekend. That does include a couple of side trips. You'd still be on the road well after I have pulled in the driveway. However that looks like such a great fishery. It would be worth the drive. Billethead had asked sometime ago would it be worth all the effort just to catch one fish or even to just encounter that one fish. It seems that your answer is a definite yes. Ham Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 John, for you Canada isn't a lot further away than Venice, La. And not even think about driving to Key West, Fla. Crazy to think about the years I lived in Monroe, La and because of the slow dawn of the Internet never met Plastic_worm and shared some adventures. Oh well, that probably kept me from getting divorced. I love reading about the trips you make and Lord willing, we will get after that this Fall. Plastic_worm Posted January 17, 2017 Author Posted January 17, 2017 Ham, it is funny to think about the places our paths have probably crossed. Hopefully they'll literally cross in SELA this Fall if not sooner. John, yeah I'll pretty much drive anywhere to fish. I really enjoy the travel, seeing the country. But I also I hate to fly! If I could do it my way, I'd live out of a van and be on the road all year. But I also I hate to fly! +1 for hate to fly. Drove all the way down to Florida, just cause of that. The drive did make me appreciate the scenery here in Missouri more. Felt like most of the other states (at least those parts of them we drove through), were much more bland in scenery, and too flat for my liking. JestersHK and Plastic_worm 2
Quillback Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 Beautiful fish! That's something I want to do at least once in my life, catch a redfish. Plastic_worm 1
