Grub colors are not a huge deal to me. I have pounds and pounds of smoke salt and pepper, pearl, and straight smoke in the boat.

But one color has always been a local favorite. Smoke red flake. Apparently GYCB has stopped making it in the 5" single tail, both smoke large red, and smoke red/black. Apparently the same for Kalin's.

After a pretty thorough search yesterday, all I could find smoke red in was the 5" Chompers, 4" GYCB, 3" Kalin's, and the Big Bite grubs. BPS still has the excellent smoke/red/copper listed.

Just a heads up for the other hoarders.

Funny, my go to has always been watermelon seed or avocado. Of course, I still prefer the Manns Stingray. Call me the opposite of trendy.

You know there are days and places where small details make a big difference. I'm reminded of one particular outing where my guide buddy and I were fishing, and smoke-pepper red flake was better than smoke-pepper blue flake. Granted this was in a different state fishing for walleyes, but still...flake color meant catching fish or not.  We were fishing the same setups and same jig heads, but the color of the flake was a deal breaker. We both had a hard time believing it, but that was the case.  When I changed to red flake, I caught fish, but blue flake was a curse.

The kicker came later when I shifted to a Kalin's translucent red pepper over chartreuse just to see and did as well as my buddy.  Usually color didn't make that much difference, but it did then.

I've had favorites discontinued by GYCB also and hoarded them from all over the country while I could. GYCB 5" Smoke w/ large black flake my standard. BPS smoke w/ copper has been good.

There's something about the smoke red though. It's always been a big fish color.

I agree with you, smoke red flake is my favorite, I have 4 inch Yum smoke red flake ( 1 bag left, I wish I had 30 or more bags left) that I bought 5 or 6 years ago and now it is almost impossible to find that color in anything.  My second favorite is smoke salt and pepper, then clear salt and pepper.

The Yum Muy grub was too good to be allowed to stay on the market.
