Think the smoke pepper are $4/25 or so, 4" and a bigger 5". Also tough enough they don't deform as easily in the bag. Normally, I use Zoom grubs or Chompers, save the GYCB for days when they are super touchy.
mixermarkb Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 GYCB for me, with superglue. I'll still lose a tail or three, but since I started flying them ala Ned, I use half the grubs I used to. dtrs5kprs 1

Some lakes are "color Y" lakes. Smoke red grubs have always been one of those deals. Enough that they make Chompers 5" in the ugly smoke with minimal large red flake. Basically just for the Ozarks, or so I've been told. At one time they didn't even have specific labels for those. They were bagged with another color on the label, and marked over by hand with a Sharpie. Smoke red gitzits were excellent 30+ years ago. Have not done as well with it in other colors. That includes swim baits, which should have worked given the grub deal. I should add I've also been told it doesn't matter, except when it does. dtrs5kprs and mixermarkb 2

I kinda "know" when it's grub time. I'm likely catching them on every color, but looking for the color that's going to catch them best. Like almost anything else, I start with a color based on water color, available light, and assumed aggressiveness of the fish. I tweak from there. vernon 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Ham Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 Here's what ruined me on grubs. Assault lures got out of the bass market. Somehow I got lucky and got in on the hoardfest. 100 count grubs where $10. 120 count Hulas where 10 bucks also. Next best deal was Wave Worms. Tiki Grubs. $1.00 for 10. I don't like em quite as much. Have to pull them faster to get tail kicking. Bigger profile. Still bought 100's. BPS had all their Zoom stuff 50% off one Black Friday morning. I got a lot of Fat Alberts I will look into the Big Bite stuff in a few years. mixermarkb 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
*T* Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Mentioned this before but the 4" Yamamoto Single Tail Grubs have a very thin connector between tail & body. Fish can easily tear tail off. 5" version has thicker connector so does not have this problem.  Still will need replacement after number of fish but not nearly as bad. Haven't bought any in a while, but that's how they used to be. "Water is the driving force of all Nature." -Leonardo da Vinci
abkeenan Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I've always been loyal to Kalin's. That's all the man who got me fishing threw (Grandpa), so that's all that I throw. dblades and Champ188 2
Smallieguy87 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 I like the rage grubs in green pumpkin and pearl. I will us the Kalins grubs a lot and always have luck with you guessed it....Green pumpkin. I do love their Avacado colors as well. Never seemed to have the same luck with most smoke colors. Zoom Fat Alberts are nice and i would like to give the zman grubs a try. Quillback 1
Champ188 Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 One of the best fishermen I've ever known (leading career money winner in the old Central Pro-Am and Heartland circuits) once told me the only grub color you ever need on Table Rock is the Kinami/Yamamoto natural shad. It's sort of a cloudy smoke color with small flake in black, silver and gold. He lives in Hollister so TR is his home lake. dtrs5kprs and Quillback 2
