cheesemaster Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I would say they screwed the pooch also. What is the reason they keep a winter pool at 917 so when the spring rains get here there is less capacity for it. Keep the winter pool at 910 or 905 so when rain like this hits it's not such a disaster. Floods in 2007 or 2008, 2011, 2015 and now 2017.... Muddy Water 1

Ran across it then went to the hardware store in Kimberling. Popped up and took the pic. Credit where it's due, MODOT didn't waste time once the decision was made.

In fairness, they did pull the lake much lower this winter than they have recently. My issue is with allowing the lake to fill with a ridiculously wet forecast. I was braced for torrential rains three weeks ago.
176champion Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 They are dumping like 52,000 cfs now..what's the max they can dump? dtrs5kprs 1 I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! Bruce Philips

If nothing else, they could have had a foot or two less water, which would have been huge. I disagree. To have done anything differently than what they did would have likely been a direct violation of federal law and would have cost someone their career and maybe worse. All of the protocols, policies and procedures exist for a reason and they all must be strictly adhered to or else the entire system breaks down and the consequences would almost certainly be much worse for someone somewhere along the line. It's impossible and impractical to look at any one, two or even three reservoirs in an isolated manner. What happens from here all the way back to North Dakota significantly impacts what happens all the way to the gulf and everything in between. Table Rock Lake did and is doing exactly what it was constructed to do - hold massive amounts of excess flood water in order to reduce damage and losses downstream. bfishn, mixermarkb, MOPanfisher and 2 others 5 "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups." From what I could find in online news reports, they hit 69,000cfs in 2011 and then 72,000 in 2015. Obviously they can release more, but there's the historical perspective. dtrs5kprs 1
176champion Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 Never mind i think i found my answer... Between elevations 937 and 942 the dam’s ten Tainter gates will be fully raised letting loose 450 thousand CFS into Lake Taneycomo. This scenario would effectively submerge and destroy the powerhouse, power transmission grid, hatchery, and wreak serious destruction down stream. An illustration of how Table Rock’s ten spillways might appear under these circumstances mimics this: the floodgates will extend up and out from the structure, like eyebrows, shadowing the concrete spillways! dtrs5kprs 1 I know everything about nothing and know nothing about everything! cheesemaster Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 See where Winter pool was noted to be 881 at some point? Not to say I want it there in the winter, but I would like to know what revelation came about to increase winter pool to 917? What is the logic?
MSUFisherBear Posted May 1, 2017 Posted May 1, 2017 I hate to take one side or the other There's always going to be second guessing. I'm guessing that several of these decisions are also compounded by other factors. I saw a map on the NWS showing where just north of the West Plains area a total of 10+" observed. I know the Current River around Van Buren recorded an all time high flood level as well as several others in the basin (not to mention the many that were in the moderate to severe flood categories). Clearwater Lake (Black River) was somewhat at a concern of cresting it's spillway. All of that water is heading south at the same time. I don't think anyone could have effectively mitigated the flooding that this storm was going to cause. I feel like, for the Corps, it was a "pick your poison" scenario. I know this is terrible for a lot of different people, but I just can't help but think the outcomes were going to be poor regardless of what was done. vernon 1 There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind. ~Washington Irving
