I'm going to commit to throwing it more this summer.  I've had a little success with it in the past, don't feel like I use this presentation as much  as I should.

ive been throwing it with finess - braid with a 6-8# leader, light gear, 1/8 or 3/16oz tube jig, and 3.5" tubes.

My qs for those in the know:

Am I missing out by not upsizing my bait/tube jig?  Are there conditions that call for a heavier presentation?

Any tube jig suggestions?  Would like to try it on an ewg hook.  I saw big bites and secret lures have ewg tube jigs - any opinions on if one is better than the other?

Thanks in advance for any help

The original Gitzit was 3.75 inches, so yours is right in the normal range. Fished with the "inside the tube" jig head, the bait will spiral to the bottom on slack line. That differs from how the tube falls if T-rigged or Jika rigged. I found the original setup catches a lot of fish on Table Rock, but it had two disadvantages that caused me to move away from that way of rigging. First, it hung up on everything. Second, I was gut hooking more than half the fish. On a side note, I had the same gut hook problem on a C-rigged fish doctor.

As for weight and line, you can comfortable move to 8 - 10 pound test and 1/4 ounce heads.

If you want to finesse fish, I say go with the Ned on Dave's jig heads.

I fish them often when I feel that the bass are wanting a small offering.  but, I just fish them on regular gear.  I often just stick them behind a 1/4 or 3/8 jig head, and go to slinging.  I've caught plenty of bass with this method.  a drop of glue up on the neck of the jig head helps to keep the gitzit in place.  I use want is call a flipping tube.

I drag tubes with 1/4-3/8 heads. Kind of like a fb jig in wind, it can be hard to have one too heavy. This isn't swimming a tube, it's dragging it on the bottom, snapping it up letting it fall.

We use either weedless speed load heads, like a big crappie tube head, or stupid style heads. Our stupid heads are just round shakey heads poured with EWG Mustads and no screw lock.

The only tubes I use are 4" BPS magnum tubes with 1/4 or 3/8oz standard shank tube hooks.  I like to get tube hooks with 60 degree eyes.  They seem to have better action than the 90 degree eyes.  With those I usually stupid rig them although you really have to lay into them to get the hook through all that plastic.  I've been trying a different hook that has a thin wire loop guard that goes under the point of the exposed hook and they seem to be working ok so far and it still keeps it pretty snag free.

I haven't thrown tubes in years. I know they are highly effective but they are fish killers. No way around it. Too easy for them to gulp it down. I will throw a jig or other craw imitator in place of the tube. I also have gotten away from throwing the fish doctor/centipede split shot/mini-carolina rig for the same reasons. Both are great fish catchers. Not knocking anyone for using them but I grew tired of hurting fish and going through the gills to remove my junk from their gullet. Just too many times hoisting a 13" smallies out of the water and immediately seeing blood running from their gill plates, down their beautiful bronzed sides and the bait basically coming out their rear end.

That is a genuine fact. You definitely need to be quick on the trigger. I try to stay away from scented tubes too.

I think the fish doctor/centipede is even worse because you really only have contact with the sinker. The free floating plastic on the leader length can get inhaled and you can't really feel a strike often times. By the time you load up or see the line taking off, they already have it up to their posterior.

So you're admitting that scent works? 😋
