Good questions wrench.  Those that have the $600 + guns say that the inner componets are superior to the lower end units. I also have read where the accuracy is better due to a better quality barrel. Some of the air guns are upwards of $1500.  Im sure those are quality of the highest for an air gun. I told myself $350 would be my max, because after that price tag, i will just buy another "real" gun.

Gotcha.   Exactly.

Wrench, if you get serious about this air gun stuff, your more than welcome to take one or 2 of mine to see if any of these fit your itch. Or take all 4 and try that. Tgeres gotta be one in the 4 thatshould fit. All i ask is you sight them in at 100 yards, leaving ONLY 1 hole in the paper with 10 pellets.  😃

If i were to spend more than i said, this would be the one. If you get time, look at reviews of this one. Its a top teer gun for the under $1000 group.

That is exactly the one my buddy has. I mentioned it on page one here. The .25 caliber. A deadly shot he and his air gun are,

I donot know the  specifics of my 177 RWS but it is not much lighter than a deer rifle. With a scope mounted on it I can pretty well pick off chipmunks amd squirrls at 25 to 30 ft. That Thing shoots wherecit is pointed better than any other I  had. think a lot of what  get out of a air rifle is what your sooting out of it. For small virmin I Really like those pellets with a BB inbedded in the end. They hit real real hard.

Appreciate it.  I don't know how deeply into it I'm likely to get.  I haven't messed with airguns since I was 10.  Once I got my first .22 the airguns went to rust.

The old Daisy Powerline pumps and the old Crosman pump guns used to loose their juice if you carried them "ready to fire" with the safety on, so really they were worthless for hunting anything except bullfrogs or something that would sit there and wait for you to pump it 10 times.    That was always my biggest hangup with trying to kill critters with an air rifle.   I assume that the newer (and better) guns are better in that regard?

I have plenty of squirrels and rabbits around here that I wouldn't mind making an occasional stew out of, but neighbors are just close enough that you have to pick your shots with a rimfire or shotgun VERY CAREFULLY.   A good airgun would eliminate that concern and we could have some fun with it around here.

Ha. They still make those 880's. Even a few clubs around for those with them.

Yes the air guns have come along way. Im pretty sure you would be impressed if you had one in your hands. 2 stage triggers, set poundage on the trigger like the big guns. Just ordered a Hammers 3x9x40 scope off Amazon to try. Thats something else. A normal riflescope wont hold up to an air gun, or so thats the word on the net from the factory. Wouldnt think an air gun would have any recoil, but they do. Had a little bruise on the right shoulder the other day after about 30 shots.

In a spring gun, you have a heavy piston accelerating forward, then slamming to a halt, so there are forces back and forward, thats the recoil you feel, and the reason a normal scope wont hold up. Most scopes arent braced for the forward "recoil".

Hence why i read constant about stock scope mounts coming loose after several shots, even with a loctite applied.  The scope i ordered has a 1 piece mount that should eliminate that.
