Driving down the gravel road, i noticed a few doves feeding on the gravel. Got me thinking about the upcoming season. Didnt make it out one day last year, but this year im hoping to change that. Been researching the best bordering state to dove hunt, as far as bird numbers, and public ground. Thinking of taking a 3 or 4 day trip early season.  Anyone hunt doves out of state?

The sod farms close to the GP power lines in North Georgia were the best dove hunting I ever experienced.  They roost on the power lines and feed in the fields which have irrigation ponds everywhere.   Only place I've ever seen dove tornados.   Once you figure out a good place to stand you can easily limit out in 10 minutes.  In the '80's the Georgia Power property was all open to the public...and there was ALOT of it, not sure if that is still the case.

Sounds like my experiences in Ca.  We spent opening week for years hunting ag. fields. We would stand in the concrete water drainage ditches and would see more birds, and have more fun before noon, than i've seen in 20 years in Mo.

I have a spot marked in Oklahoma. May try that. Lots of family in N. Tx. so can haul the boat down there and fish Texoma in the mornings, and hunt afternoons.

Kansas shows potential also. Bird counts the past 2 years weren't the best tho.  Either way, it will be an adventure.

Kansas has some managed fields for doves, never have hunted them, I would think there would be a lot of pressure, but maybe after the opener during the week it would not be too bad.  Lot of walk in fields out there too, seems that if a person had time to scout you could find some of the walk in fields that might have some good dove opportunity.

They are literally all over my baseball fields at work. all. year. long.

Just find a nice dirt patch and you'll always have them around.

Thanks Quill.  Lots of good info there. Looks like alot of 10 to 20 acre sunflower fields.

I have a few dairy fields here that im going to set up on. Those usually have birds coming and going often.

Just like deer camp, bird camp is a great time to socialize with the buddies. But even better, you can chat and shoot at the same time.

I had the pleasure of going to a few "shoots" that were setup as fund raisers for a senator.  Brush hogged sun flower fields next to the Missouri river with literally clouds of birds.  Full breakfast, open bar, ladies clean all your birds and a big BBQ.  Awesome setup!  We would sit on the levee in the shade and just have the best time.  The dude retired and it was over just like that.

I love a good dove shoot.  I've hit managed areas in St Charles County but they got so packed it was difficult to get drawn.  I've had some phenomenal hunts later in the season on those same fields after everyone quit on them.  New birds would show up way late in the season with very cold weather.  They follow the river down from the north.

I am gathering my gear for our annual dove season opener on Saturday.  Will be plenty of hunter but the large area we go to needs lots of hunters to keep them moving.  Usually have plenty of birds for the obligatory bacon wrapped grilled dove breast lunch, followed by a short afternoon shoot and a low country boil.  Might even spend the night and go again sunday.

Bond or I lose my bet.

Best I ever had was Osage Orange roosts in Vernon County.  Cut milo in early season was mighty fine too.  Need eight or ten breasts and some bacon!
