Thanks tracman for using your misfortune as a tool to help others. This is a personal reminder for me that 50% of the time is not enough. Which I am guilty of.

Luck is where preparation meets opportunity...... Or you could just flip a coin???B)

After somebody you know drowns you never forget.

Wish I could agree.  I'm actually THAT stupid.

I don't FORGET, I just for some ignorant reason assume that I'm so awesome that it won't happen to ME.   I throw the kill switch on my wrist before hammering down....but it's way too rare for me to put on my PFD.    And I've been thrown before, so if I die in a boating accident I totally 100% deserve it.

I need to pull my act together, and I appreciate these reminders.  Hopefully some day it will sink into my hard head before it's too late.

I never really forgot to wear it either. Just didn't. I did after that though.

But I haven't wore one in Harps boat on Fellows.

In all seriousness this is really, really scary and at times I am not good at doing what I am supposed to and I fish solo allot,

Quill has fished with me and can vouch for the fact I wear my pfd at all times. That makes it difficult to attach the kill switch. Instead, I put a loop in it and slide my wrist in.

BTW, like the others, I am glad you are here to write your post!

Scary business there!  Glad you're alive.

Hydraulic steering...IMG_20180713_152753122.jpg

Or Cable/mechanical ? IMG_20180713_154223551.jpg

My main beef with hydraulic steering systems is that you don't feel binding or play in the system.  And if the motor pivot housing binds in some way  the hydraulics have enough torque to easily break a steering component or blow a hole in a fluid hose.

I've seen kids playing in their dads boat while trailered, crank the wheel when the motor was locked down by the transom saver....and bust the steering arm and/or hydraulic cylinder bracket.     If a 6 year old kid can do it then you bet your rear-end that you can do it.

I want nothing but stainless steel between my hands and that motor.  Hard for me to trust some pressurized fluid in a rubber hose, and a handful of tiny spring & ball check valves.

Wrench my steering is the hydraulic steering matching the first pic. The bolt that goes through the motor lost its nut and vibrated out. I urge any one with this system to inspect it and make sure the nut is present.  It is not a bolt that is easily seen.

This is also what I had been doing. I was getting into a good habit of wearing it. This particular evening before take off it didn’t even cross my mind. I wish they would make them like lawn mower ls if you get up it cuts the engine off or at least shifts it ti neutral.

Being thrown from that boat at 53 mph was one of the scariest situations I have ever been in. Until it was fixing to run me over!
