I have a a xtreme river boat with a 60/40 jet. Was thinking of upgrading my trolling motor to a 24v but curious if that was going to be too much weight to run shallow.  Is anyone else running 24v trolling motors and if so are you keeping the batteries in the front hatch or move them to the back deck.  Thanks

Good question and I will be watching for answers. I run 12V and have my battery up front. 60/40 jet also but my boat is real heavy and like you I want to ride high. I think @snagged in outlet 3 runs 24V with same motor but lighter hull than mine. Lets see if we can get him to help you,

I have run a 24 V trolling motor on my trout boats since 2003 and never had an issue running shallow. Several people on OAF have been in my old AFF boat and also my Top Water that is about 3 years old. I have always run mine with the batteries in the front.

I tried a 12V Minn Mota power drive on the Top Water when I first got it because it was so much lighter than my AFF. I had the one battery in the back along with my cranking battery. It was fine as long as you were up on plane but at slow speeds, like putting it on the trailer, the front end was really squirrelly. I iced it to the front and everything worked much better. Then upgraded to an Ultrex trolling motor and they are all 24V. No issues at all on running shallow. Both of my boats had a step up to the front deck and that’s where we put the batteries.

I ran a 24v on a 1648 with a 50/35hp and don't recall having any issues running shallow. If you fish current, a 24v trolling motor is the best thing you can buy for your boat unless you strictly anchor fish. If I had the room for another battery, I'd run a 36v in a heart beat!

I run a 24v ultrex on my blazer.  It's a game changer.   On my trout boat I've thought about this myself going to a 24v 80thrust.  In most any River I've fished the 80 pound will hold the boat with the exceptions of a swifter current River.   Like Pete said spot lock is like heaven on earth on rivers.  It works best imo in boat positioning in current and windy lakes.  It will roam around more on calm lake days.   Having a high dollar rig with spot lock isn't a nessecity, you can get an 80 pound standard moter. Or split the difference on like a terrova which also has spot lock.   For trout fishing white River the 50 pound. One I have now on the trout boat is fine for me  .   Good luck.  Bret.
