Interesting, don't be scared of the Missouri or Mississippi. I fished alot out of Brickhouse Slew mostly catfish but have caught some nice bass, even a smallmouth  off the riprap along highway 3. 16' Jon with a 8 9.5 Hp..

Fished all that a lot in my younger days and ran trot lines at night out of an even smaller boat.  Never bothered me a bit...lots of boats out there and up above at Candy Island and around the marina at the mouth of Dardenne Creek.  Just gotta use your head...did go down stream to duck hunt once in pretty good flows and tried to head back in a pretty good sleet storm and motor did not have enough posterior to top the current.  Ended up walking out to a Farm house and getting a lift to my truck and retrieving the boat the next day.  Yes, I been stupid, but we did get our mallards.

The current on parts of the MO do some rather scary things.  Giant logs just pop up in front of you and stuff like that.   Areas where the current is slow, you'd think it was deeper....but it ain't.  Areas where it's fast you'd assume it was shallow ....but it ain't.   Whirlpools in the middle of the channel for no apparent reason.    Naw, say what you will about that giant muddy widowmaker ditch, but there's nothing in it that interests me enough to get on it again.

If it were up to me I'd have a 15 or 16' boat 48-52" wide with a 60/40 or 40/28 on it with either stick or tiller steer and no frills to it.  Something nice and small and easy to get around in the rivers, easy to get off bars if I get stuck, and nothing pretty to mess up if I hit a few things.  But that's not up to me since the wife would rather have something to take the family out in and be comfortable and safe.  A modified V such as a Legend or Blazer would be nice so I could still go out on the big lakes if I wanted to but I've heard they can get pretty heavy and being out by myself could be an issue if I get stuck.  I do have a kayak that I really do enjoy getting out in so I guess it really does come down to time and priorities.  Do I prefer to spend my weekends with the wife and kids or would I rather be out fishing by myself.  That's a tough call at this point.

Solo fishing has a awful lot of up sides. It has its down sides as well. I do not know how to describe the mode I get into when I am fishing alone.  It is just some kind of intense awareness. When I got anyone in the boat I am aware of that also and the two do not mix well. I know I catch more fish alone than with someone in the boat. That does not apply to Hybrid fishing. I am fine with company then. My Hybrid fishing buddy fishes for them with a 6 foot crappie rod and 6-8 lb test Nano Fil. I can assure you he sure has a ball.
