My 40hp Yamaha is the same way....they didn’t build a choke into the motors so it takes a while initially to Start but good to go once it catches fire.  Starts right up

It has an enrichener valve, controlled by a temperature sensor.  If it is hard to cold start then the enrichener valve is stuck closed, or there is a problem with the sensor or its wire harness.

My 90 HP has always been hard to cold start it seems, but I also discovered that if you pump the bulb before cranking (old habit) it will flood immediately.  Less choke and it seems to start better.  Once started and run it is a quick start.  That is a great looking boat wish i needed it.

Yall need to have your engines worked on.  My 2004 90hp had a great cold start.  On the coast, or at Cotter.  It even started good at 15 degrees(cotter boat ramp)

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

My Yamaha 50 pro started in nothing flat, cold, hot, on a trip or months after being on one.  I was always religious about running it out of gas if it was not going to be used in the next week or two.  Not sure if it really helps, but still.  If it worked for me, who are you to question it?

The old "Pro" and ProV series Yamaha outboards were great !    And still are.

If you still have one, hang on to it !

my worst boat selling regret ever.  Tilt and trim SS prop, it was perfect. It was on an 18'`6" x 54 semivee that I had built a nice deck for and had a good floor in it. Took out the middle seat and had ribs welded in to keep it stiff.  Big open floor that was really good for catfishing or waterfowling on the Missouri. That boat's worst feature was the astroturf.  No way to get the sand out of it ever.  And on the Missouri, there is no end of sand getting in everything.
