I just day before yesterday  found a gazetteer of Mo that I bought 15-50 years ago, used two or three times and forgot about. A regular state published road map served me better at the time.  I don't recall why exactly, but  I found the Gazetteer Atlas to be a major disappointment based on the reviews I'd read and the cost at the time.  Also found a MDC published trout map  and a bass map that I don't even recall ever seeing before.

I will lose service in a lot of rural areas and having a paper map is invaluable to me.

I always get screen shots of the places before I go, just in case I lose service.  Just make sure that North is UP so you don't get all screwed up. 😊

The paper maps are pointless anymore when you have Google Earth. You can do screenshots like Wrench mentioned or even print out sections to carry with you. I’ve been with a guy that likes to print off the entire section we are going to float so we can pick out likely camp spots.

The trick is to not get shot accessing most of the smaller streams.  Most are private land.  And coming back to a complete mode of transportation.  Be sure and get permission first.

Delorme made an app for android a few years back that works offline.  I have downloaded topo quads and aerials to it for navigation on a cheap Samsung Tracphone I picked up at Wally World.  Added a 128g SD card and have maps on it.  Gps works great and has compass feature.  Decent battery and screen, far better than most dedicated gps handheld units.  Its not my phone and only $40 so it is expendable but has worked well for several years now.  Takes pics, videos, plays music, and surfs web too with wifi.

I have the app on 2 tablets also, a 7" and 10" for car and in home scouting.

Do they gather street view images out in the boonies now?  They didn't use to.

If it is a state highway, there is a good chance there is a street view. Gravel roads are rarely covered. Paved county roads just kind of depend.

Even if you can’t see the actual access, sometimes you can see the entrance to the last turnoff and can see if the road is private or not.

So far when I’ve been searching I’ve been careful to only pick what may be access under bridges or public land.

Might get shot is a huge overstatement. Some drunk rental boater got shot by a drunk landowner on the Meramec a couple years ago. Haven’t heard of anyone else getting shot for trespass and I’ve only been run off politely a couple times.

It happened once so it's not that unlikely to happen again. Key factor is you don't know who you will meet in such a situation. A landowner near me is fairly unpredictable , somewhat high tempered and being treated for PTSD after one of the desert wars. I know  enough about him to believe he could be in the news one day over a trespass issue. He hasn't threatened anyone, but temper can be provoked and when medications are involved no one knows where it can lead. I'm sure that  drunk trespasser on the Meremec did not believe he was in danger,  he had never been dead before.

Know the name of that app? It sounds interesting.
