I think I remember right from history books that L&C didn't paddle  drag up stream much, they used boats with sails.   I'm sure there was some getting out and portaging and it had a lot of oars on it but I'm sure if the wind was blowing right they were using that sail.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

...and used wind when it made sense. And, don't forget the brutal portages they faced.

From the journals I think they did a lot of poling upstream.  While it would have been an awesome adventure it would have been a miserable day to day life.  What are we doing today?  Let's see we will work like dogs poling this boat against the current and around sandbars and snags then make camp.  Tomorrow however we will do it all over again, but maybe get lucky and have a thundrestorm come through and break this miserable heat for a little bit.  But at least these buckskin are comfortable when it's wet.

Never gave it much thought or consideration.  But making a blanket statement that they are rapist is pretty out there.  Society as a whole was much dirtier and disease ridden back then.  They were also a lot younger as parents than we are today.  My great grandma was married and gave birth at 16 but that is unheard of today.

Yelp my Dad came home from Korea at the age of 22. He married my Mom she had me at the age of 16.
