Johnsfolly Posted December 25, 2020 Posted December 25, 2020 Most winters back in Columbia we would gets small flocks of robins come and eat the small fruits on our mock crabapple tree. Some years cedar waxwings would get into that action as well.

Most winter hawks in MO are likely down from Canada while the ones in summer travel down towards the gulf or into Mexico. You can see the size differences with the winter birds typically being a bit larger. Enjoy watching the groups of hawks migrating south. Do you all know what the groups are called? A kettle. jdmidwest Posted December 25, 2020 Author Posted December 25, 2020 Around here, they seem to disappear around October and are back in flocks in March. Then I have a few pairs raise in the trees of the yard all summer. Usually see them foraging for bugs in the yard grass and leaves. Or someone closed the border. I've been in Bolivar the past few days clearing lots for a new development. There was a whole pack of Robins picking through the fresh dirt. I thought it was odd too, but I guess it's not unusual for them to hang around sometimes. When I lived in Minnesota, they were gone by fall. When you saw them showing up in late April, you knew spring was here. -Austin

Did know that. We had a pair of broad wing hawks around. They don't stay too long. We also get flocks of tundra swans and we have seen quite a few in the last couple of weeks.

Dutch Posted December 25, 2020 Posted December 25, 2020 Last year all of our neighborhood robins disappeared, like usual. On a drive to Rice’s Camp we saw hundreds of them along the road in the edge of the woods.
ness Posted December 25, 2020 Posted December 25, 2020 We put garland around our front door each holiday season and every year we get a bird or two take refuge in it. I went to let the dogs out one last time last night and had a house finch fly over my shoulder and into the house. #%^*+! Rigged a fishing net to the end of a broomstick and for the next few minutes we tried catching the poor thing. Dogs sitting outside the storm door watching the fun. Caught and released unharmed.
