So anyone bag a grayling yet?  Thought this was interesting (see link below).  Sounds like a good place for a road trip, grayling, Colorado river cutts, tiger trout and maybe some big brookies.  One of these days I am going to do a long road trip out west, might put this place on my list of places to visit and fish.

No grayling for me yet. Marty has caught them in Montana. He should definitely be your first contact for a western native trout fishing trip.

I'll definitely consult with Marty prior to going.  For me it would be more of a generalized fishing trip than focusing on natives.  Might be able to find some overlooked bass fishing out there too.

Yes caught them in Montana as John Said plus Wyoming and Utah. Not in the boulder mountain area you linked to but have fished there and caught the native Colorado River cutthroat for part of out native cutthroat challenge for Utah. Two years now missing the western native fishing. Hope things straighten out soon.

I'm planning western natives next year. Hoping to check off NM slam and trying to get both AZ challenges.

Grayling is included for Arizona as an option....we will see.

Nice,

We have done The natives in both of those states. Gila in New Mexico and Apache in Arizona. It's neat to fish the native ranges the fish inhabit. You get to see totally different ecosystems.

Definitely on my bucket list. Just deferred due to eastern move. Once I get a few things done on the east coast will go back and look at western fishing.

Caught some smallmouth in MT on Flathead Lake near Glacier and the flathead river that flows out of it. Snake river in Idaho is suppose to be good.

The answer may not lie at the bottom of a glass, but you should always check

Wanting to complete the Western Native Trout Challenge sometime in next 10 years...hoping to pack up the state specific slams along the way.

Hopefully flying into NM and knocking out rainbow, brown, rio cutt, and brook quickly....then drive across state to Gila territory...then off to apache and finish with as many of the Arizona challenge as I can.

We have completed the first challenge of the western native trout challenge in one trip. If they had grandfathered what we would of already done we would be done with second challenge. We need to revisit the Apache and Gila to get that done. Do some reshuffling of states and have that senond challenge complete!
