Sumpin ain't quite right wit dat boi ! 🤔

I agree.  It's certainly one of the strangest channel catfish I've seen.  Spawning male channel cats usually get darker in color and big heads.  As this one was on the thin side, I'm guessing this is a post-spawn male.

Even so....I had to take a long look at it...wondering if it was some sort of hybrid.

I don't hear of catfish hybrids.  However, a buddy of mine caught a large odd catfish out of his uncle's farm pond.  They showed the pictures to the DNR, who said they thought it was a channel cat/bullhead hybrid.  It was 6-8 lb range, I believe.  I saw the pictures....They weren't close-ups, and I think they were black-n-white film, not color...so it was tough to tell.

Its a good reason to not eat fish I catch.  Well....maybe I'd eat ocean fish...even though they are saturated with microplastics.  I dunno...we can't win.

I’ve caught some monster fertilizer bass on golf courses.  Wouldn’t anything  out of those ponds though.

When I was a kid we fished the Salt river all the time, and there was a stretch from "Condemned Bridge" down to the confluence of the Mississippi where you'd catch these gray catfish with no adipose fin that the commercial fishermen called "Fulton's".    I'm guessing that they were a cross between a channel and a blue..... but I dunno.

I've never seen one anywhere else. We caught them fairly regularly in the mid 1970's, some up to 15-16 pounds, but mostly 3-5lbs.

My buddy and I caught one like that while jug fishing one of the branches of the Lake of the Ozarks. Weren't sure if it was channel or deformed flathead. Still an ugly sucker. Let it go instead of throwing it the cooler.
