I was part of an event that Jeff Gordan attended. It was open to the public but only some contest winners actually got to come on stage to meet him and get a pic and autograph. Those people had to have a ticket. My job was to collect their ticket and make sure that Jeff had plenty of markers for autographs. There were thousands of people there. Way more than there needed to be. The line for the ticket holders went down one side of the room and around the back, so those that didn't have tickets could crowd the stage we were on and just watch him and he talked to them a bit between people. They seemed pretty content. But there was this one little boy that just couldn't understand why these other people could go see Jeff but he couldn't. After a while the whole thing just seemed ignorant to me so when I went to get the next ticket holder I instead reached down and picked up that kid and sent him over to see Jeff Gordan. Jeff was great and spent a minute talking to him, took the pic and signed an autograph. I then helped him back to his mom who of course was in tears at this point. Mission accomplished.

As I turn around I can tell that Mr. Gordon wants to have a word with me. He looks curious. I leaned down where no one could hear us. He said "Did that kid have a ticket." I remember it plain as day. I had to choose my words carefully. I might have just pissed off the biggest star in NASCAR at that time. So I looked him straight in the eye and said "Nope". He smiled and said: "Do it again". So as the ticket holders progressed through the line and their turn with Jeff, I would pick out random kids and send them up. Turns out it was a local radio station promotion to get a ticket. They were furious. But what were they going to do? He's Jeff MF'ing Gordon. Fun day.
