TU Rim Shoals trail dedication 4/17

There is now a quality 1-mile trail that starts at the Rim Shoals walk-in access and follows the river downstream. The trail first began almost 20 years ago when Gary Flippin of Rim Shoals Lodge hacked a trail on land belonging to Marshall Berg along the river below the walk-in access. Gary was regularly rescuing waders caught in high water on the island at Rim Shoals. The trail provided a safe way to exit the water. .

There has been a major project to expand and enhance the trail. The original trail was a bit rough. It is now really nice and extended another 1/2 mile downstream. We have added 3 picnic tables at the beginning of the trail and another at the end, a mile downstream. The new trail was a joint effort between Trout Unlimited White River Chapter 698 and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, with additional funding from Barbara Graham through the Graham Foundation in memory of her husband, Frank. The trail is on land belonging to Marshall Berg and Hugh McClain, who have granted access for the trail.

Decades ago my buddy and I were down there fishing the big boulders at the end of the island near dark.   We heard something growling, hissing and stomping in the woods there.  It was a foot race of two guys in waders to get back to the car at the access.😂

I don’t know what it was but I was out of there.   Still have PTSD from an “incident” in the port a John at McClellans one night.  😂

May have been a bear??? They say there are a few around here, but I have yet to see one.

Did you have to clean out your waders when you got back?

No. My buddy is 10 years older than me so I was ahead of him.  😂

Many years ago, back before anybody carried cell phones, a buddy and I crossed the river at Rim and then the water came up.   We contemplated hiking all the way to 101 hwy. and hitch hiking back.... but luckily a dude and his wife wheeled into the boat ramp just upstream from there, and we hollered, begged, and screamed until he said "OK"...and he went and got a guy to come launch a boat and ferry our ignorant asses back across the river.  😅

Definitely added to my dislike of tailwaters.  

Tailwater rivers, and lakes like Bull Shoals and Truman where the water levels fluctuate drastically all over the place......I just have a big time hangup with that.  It isn't natural.  I can't like it.

I really like them.  Other waters seem stagnant in comparison.  Not that they are I just like the constant change.  Like a river on gear.
