Are you getting any jumpers?    

I've noticed the gar up in the creeks never jump, but the ones further out in the lake, over deeper water, will often get some air. 

They are way more fun when they jump 4' out of the water. 😎

Some have jumped.  But I never know how well they are hooked, and so I'm usually keeping a LOT of pressure on them to help prevent them from throwing the hook.  So, that probably makes it harder for them to get the momentum to jump.  But some still do. :)

I can understand that.  Plenty manage to shake free.  I'm glad to catch something, but I have to admit gar are distracting...instead of fishing for bigger fish that might be hanging deeper, I take the easy visual gar target.  At some point I'll probably start to ignore them.  Buts it's so fun!
