Then why have trout tags or daily permits at the trout parks? Seems like a pretty naive thought process.

It is a non refundable 10 bucks to get in the drawing then if drawn another 50 bucks to hunt. The permit fee is fine like buying a deer tag. Trout park same you get to participate. The application fee they get to keep is what bothers me.

Yep unless you get a preference point or something similar.

It's a fee to keep out the rif-raf.

Thankfully we have a choice to simply not participate.

Choice. I like that. Thankfully we have that here where we live. Thing is you can choose to drive 100 mph on the road but if you are caught you pay the price. Since we have a choice we should choose wisely.  Some choose to roll the dice and get lucky. Some do not and pay dearly moneterly or worse with their life.

It's no different than other states like Kentucky. PA, etc.

Other states do use the preference point system.

Still don't care for it. Not going to give Kentucky or PA. my money either.  Should be part of my lifetime hunting and fishing permit :) We are talking Missouri my residency not out of state.  If it was alike the daily trout tag and I was guaranteed to participate I would give it as ad administrative fee added to tag but to just give it away for a chance nope, no way. I like our MDC and the job it does for us but this is over the top IMO.  If you were still here would you donate?

I don't know about the bear deal....didn't put in for it but I did the elk.

Thought it would be cool to be the first group to kill elk. That being said the fee is what rubbed me the wrong way. Its only open to in-state hunters and has no bearings on later "Draws" other than if you're picked you can't win again right away. I pay my fair share of taxes along the way and still buy deer tags even though I qualify for landowner and often don't kill a deer. I believe in funding the department even if I don't agree with every expenditure they make.

That being said.....19,000+ signed up for the first elk hunt @ $10 that is $190K for nothing. I hope it pays 2 or 3 MDC wages but I bet it ultimately doesn't. Personally I think the fee for the tag after the fact is a joke for 5 total elk killed.

It wasn't/isn't about the $10 most of us easily blow that in day on stuff we want; its the premise for me. Honestly if I got a preference point(even though it wouldn't really increase my statistical odds) or a hat or a pin or something tangible I'd be more forgiving.

It doesn't at all change how I feel about daily fees, tag costs, ect about the normal options residents get. I am thankful that MDC is funded top 5 in the country in funding and the state takes reasonable care of its residents. I would personally like to see lifetime tags come down in price and the out of state tags go up but everyone can find something to complain about.

The ten bucks we in a day for stuff we want we have in hand, The 10 buck donation IMO to the possibility of the elk tag is like a fart in a  gust of wind its gone but like you said if that ten bucks built up in a point system it would be an investment.

I personally think that you're making this a bigger deal than necessary. Don't participate. As you said it's your choice. I used the other states to present that the MDC is not the only state agency that wants to get some money on the drawing process. To an individual that is a really small amount of money maybe even less than most school raffle tickets. To answer your question yes I would put in for the lottery and have both in KY and PA as well.
