I haven't used dry ice much.  When I have used it, it does freeze what it's touching.  Is there a rule of thumb when using dry ice?  Tricks?

I usually put a few pounds in the bottom of the cooler. Cover that with a towel and a few inches of regular ice.

If you take ice cream it’s best to cover it completely in ice. One year we took concretes from Andy’s Frozen Custard. We were worried it would melt so we put dry ice on top of it too. It was hard as a rock two days later.

We usually have two coolers, one with 5 lb of dry ice sandwiched between regular ice and anything we want to remain frozen, only open when need to get things out once per day, to re ice the other cooler.  On floats we find the Coleman 5 day coolers are much lighter than yeti and work great but you have to bungee to insure stay closed.  As @Flysmallie says, steaks, deer kabobs, B&G make the trip more enjoyable, I usually cool all beer for the trip in the bottom of the daily cooler and put a daily ration in a smaller cooler between my feet.  As stated above the dry ice and beer are not a good combination.

It is a great trip, but you will need to watch water levels and weather closely that time of year, it can be anywhere from boney or completely disappear between Mt. Hershey and Woolum, or dangerous floods that happen quickly.

This. I don't get the infatuation with Yeti. Heavy, expensive, and my steel belted Coleman works just as well.

Negatory.  There is zero chance one of those is as well insulated or sealed as any decent rotomolded cooler.  I have been using rotomolded coolers for a decade and I can tell you with absolute certainty that they hold ice better/longer.

I am assuming your taking this trip in early to mid spring?  Instead of putting warm beer directly in the cooler carry a mesh bag to chill a 6 pack at a time in the water before putting in the cooler.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Dude, a 6 pack?  I have fished with you...... a case for us would look strange behind the boat.

What makes the Yeti type coolers better is the insulated lid. Some spray foam in a cheap cooler looks d will fix them right up. Your ice can’t be sloshing in melt water if you want it to last. Let your coolers drain.

Or lay a towel over your Coleman, drain water make great coffee.

I can keep things frozen, not cold, FROZEN, for 5 days in the hot summer sun. One of those big heavy things might do it longer but I can't see where that is beneficial with all the extra added weight.

If I had a boat out on the salt I would definitely own one. But a few days out around here it is very unnecessary. Just wear the trucker Yeti hat and people will think you are plenty cool.
