What’s your opinion on Yamaha 2 strokes? Thinking about finding a 70 or a 90 to put on a duck boat. Want a little more oomph than my 40 Yamaha 3 cylinder smoker. All the duck kids are running 59” merc’s now. Who will be able to find parts in 5 or 10 years?

They've always been awesome in my opinion.   The only problem is that the older Precision Blend models have too many NLA parts.  (No Longer Available)

The Pro series and newer Yamaha 2-stroke motors are still being supported, and parts are still available.   I snatch up every one of them that I can get my hands on.   The Pro 50 especially.... Absolutely Awesome Outboard!!!  👍

IMO 3 hole yamaha's are as reliable as inline 6 fords.  I may be biased.  I have had a 50, 90, built 40, and a 40/28 jet.  How big is your duck boat?  that 40hp can be 70hp relatively cheaply

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

I thought about building my 40, but figure by the time I put 1500 bucks in it I could just sell it and buy a bigger motor. Boat is a 1756. First aluminum boat I’ve owned in 20 yrs that I didn’t build lol.

$1500 can do quite a bit to that motor.  the expensive part would be porting.  70hp carbs, cut off part of the tuner, reeds and that thing will fly

As long as you wanna do it yourself, sure, go for it.     But if you're paying someone to do it just remember that there's no warranty on performance work.  👍

Just how fast do you want to run in a freezing morning before sunrise across a shallow stump filled marsh full of flying things half groggy from no sleep???

There's something I've noticed about guys and their boats....

If it doesn't run fast enough to scare them half to death on slick calm water, then it ain't fast enough. 🙄

I still catch myself pinning her ears back from time to time, just for a little rush of adrenaline..... but I don't really know why.  It's alot more enjoyable to just cruise along without having to worry about loosing my hat, sunglasses, landing net, bump board,.....and everything else not strapped down and secured.    Plus I can chill, smoke, and drink a soda or a beer along the way.

And then of course..... because I'm an outboard tech, Everytime somebody wants me to ride with them they feel the need to PEAK IT OUT!!!!     Which typically results in me being blunt and telling them:  "Dude, it ain't the speed that concerns me..... it's your ability to keep us IN THE BOAT".    It's just as easy to flip a boat with an outboard tech riding shotgun, as it is your fishing buddy that hangs drywall.

The difference is that I've done it before and I KNOW how bad it sucks.  You, on the other hand, should take my word for it.....and believe that YOU don't wanna experience it. Ever!

Those guys are sissies. Drivers that aren’t smart enough to be scared know the boats run a lot faster with some chop on the water.
