Pat has almost the same assortment she was gifted by Chuck at her casting for recovery retreat. Plus a couple of his signed books. I got to meet him also when I picked her up.

but but, but he wrote at least two  books on flies;  Figuring out Flies (1990), All about Flies  (2001),  and  (maybe revisions or change of publisher or more books/) All About Flies: Everything the Fly Fisher Needs to Know  (2003) and All About Flies: Everything the Fly Fisher Needs to Know (2004)

I bet they still catch fish....

Well, let's face it......Fly tyers, and fly fishers really don't need to know that much.   🤷‍♂️

Most of what we know, or think we know, is a waste of brain bandwidth. 😉

Oh, we need to know so little that anyone could write the book? I had thought maybe it was a case of the old "those that can, do;  those that can't, teach" adage. Then again maybe Sharon wrote the books, her name is on them too. I've never seen them or their books, but a few years ago some post got me interested in the  Mo.  smallmouth book and in looking for it I saw the others and a couple of  movie books too.  I had never heard of the guy until I started reading this forum. I've still never heard of him outside of this forum except when searching for the book.

The flies look pretty fishy to me.

True, not much of a tier, but super nice guy.  Got to meet him at one of the Smallmouth Rodeo's.  His books, "Fly-Fishing for Trout in Missouri", and "200 Smallmouth Adventures" are must-haves for any beginner her in Missouri.  I learned a lot from them.

Also I learned a lot, particularly about fly-tying and fly-fishing, from Gavin and a few others.  M Swederska.  Actually going fishing with Al Agnew once or twice, and some of the other MSA members.

"200 Smallmouth Adventures"

At $300 on eBay, $400 on Abe Books and $764 on Amazon, I would not personally think of it as a "beginner's book", or a must have. I had it on a couple of watch-lists for a couple of years then   stopped looking for it.

That's a pricey "map".   I'd definitely sell my copy for 400.00 in a heartbeat.
