You were available...

IMO, I would choose a 7-weight as it's light enough to be fun with smaller fish and has enough muscle to handle incidental fish you would not want to lose, and here I'm thinking hybrids or a large dinner-guest walleye.

It looks like that outfit doesn't come in a 7-wt right now. You could probably find a similarly priced outfit at Bass Pro/Cabela's in a 7wt or, if you're like me, buy the 9ft 6wt today before you change your mind. Paralysis by analysis, so to speak. All points above are valid, but that Orvis kit will be ready to go out-of-the-box, just add flies. I'm sure there are local fly shops to get some to start and you could be on the water by Tuesday. You could even get some poppers are Walmart and be ready to go.

I just looked at the Orvis rod and can't help but wonder what the line is---DT or WF? I imagine the latter, but if you're throwing larger flies or poppers, you'd definitely want the weight forward. I've not checked, but Temple Fork might have a similar kit, and Cortland certainly does I imagine.  I've got a TFO 10' 6-weight that is a rocket, so I'm prejudiced about that company.

My TFOs are actually my favorite rods.

I look from time to time at Yellowstone Anglers "shootout" just to get a different perspective. They test a bunch of rods and you get 4-5 of their staff evaluating rods, reels, etc. Often a mid to lower price range will test out in their criteria better than some high end rods. I was looking for a lighter 8 wt. rod several years ago and they recommended a TFO "BVK" that was in the $250 range back then ahead of quite a few of the $700 plus rods.  Took the rod to Michigan and handled king salmon well enough on the PM.

I really appreciate this thread.  I have a cheap Cabela's setup.  Just started tying, and am trying to learn as much as I can, but the lingo is still quite a bit.  Well, most of us know an indicator is just a bobber.  But why weight forward line (WF)?  Or (DT) not sure what that means.

Why double tapered? What does that mean?

Tippett is leader, right?   When to use? Why?

Would you use the tapered leader?  To what diameters?   Why/whynot?

Just some of my questions.   Fly fishing does seem pretty easy to pick up, but also very intimidating.

Thanks for all the help.

            Double tapered line,

Fly Lines : Understanding Fly Line Taper and Why You Want to Know It (bigskyfishing.com)

I don't use double tapered lines. Weight forward for me. Never seem to spook fish.

          Tapered leaders,

Four Reasons for Tippets and Tapered Leaders | MidCurrent

Would you use the tapered leader?  To what diameters?   Why/whynot?

Yes definitely. On trout use commercial tapered leaders. Diameters depending on fly thrown and quarry size. On warmwater make my own with sections having loop to loop knots connecting them. No hinging noticed for me between sections.

Tippet on end again depending on quarry. Put on end of tapered leader to extend life as you tie flies on or break off.  My tippet on warmwater species will vary from 6lb to 14lb and may go up from there if needed.

You will get many opinions again from others. Try and find what you like. Do what you like and works for you.

We used to use 1/2 of a DT fly line on ultralight fly reels as some of the spool capacity wouldn't accommodate an 80 feet fly line and any amount of backing. That plus a lot of the fishing in the trout parks didn't require longer casts when we were sight fishing and Susie and I plus 2 kids who fly fished made it less expensive.  Might have one DT fly line left on one of the ultralight reels and the rest are all WT.
