My uncle & I are fishing Thursday & Friday & putting in at Fairfield. Any tips on getting into some fish in that general area? Uncle & his buddy are after cats & I'd love to get into some crappie or white bass. Wouldn't mind trolling a bit in the hopes of maybe a walleye, too. Any tips or advice on getting bit this time of year would be greatly appreciated.

            Carl,

Used to fish a bunch out of the Fairfield access. Need to get back with the program up there. Launch and head up towards the bridge and beyond up the Pomme arm. Both sides of the bridge. This time of the year ten foot and out deeper. You will catch crappie and whites here and there with small crankbaits. For your uncle and his buddy this may happen as it did for my wife Pat in the summer of 2020. Everyone will be satisfied, I think.  Good luck and give us a fishing report if you go.

Awesome. Thank you! Will definitely let y'all know how we do. Don't expect great pics, though. I'll try, but suck at pictures & doubt my 70 y/o uncle is any better. Lol! He's bringing his 16' Tracker & I'm bringing my new to me little 15' Lowe along as well, so my uncle can help make my learning curve a little less steep & I can get some practice, puttering about during the heat of the day. Never owned nor piloted a boat in my life & am more than a little freaked out by "big" water, so I'll take all the help I can get.

When there is wind, I have caught a lot of whites around the island.

We did also last fall with a few bonus hybrid right across from the ramp in Indian island. Best hybrid fishing though was farther up the lake from KK island and beyond. It was a hoot!

Always keep a rod rigged with a Blue Chrome Rattle Trap, you never know when an acre or two of lake will erupt in a feeding frenzy of whites mixed with hybrids.  Plenty of walleye in that area too just too dang hot for me to chase them now. Trolling crabks on Truman can result in just about anything.

I've got a fair selection of rattle traps, poppers & crank baits in either silver/chrome or natural (shad, 'gill, baby bass & the like) in sizes appropriate for bass on down to bluegill. I think I'm set up for about anything I'm hoping to catch/likely to encounter. Crappie/bluegill jigs, tackle & baits for drop shotting & Texas rigging, swim baits, even a couple slip floats & bobber stops. I can read & read & read & scour internet forums & "learn" all about a subject, but the proof is in the pudding. Guess we'll see if they'll bite what I'm offering.

Well, we didn't get skunked, but it was close- just way too hot. Surface temps over 90 by 10AM. We got 5 nice, 10"-12" crappie bouncing jigs off the 83 bridge pilings. A couple whites or wipers were hitting the topwater baitfish Thursday afternoon, but only onesies & twosies & never seen again. We trolled a lap or two around the island, but nothing & we only saw one other boat land a fish while we were out.

But, I got to hang out with my uncle (with whom I've had minimal contact for the last 35 years- good dude) who was more than happy to help keep me from screwing up my maiden voyage as a boat owner. Little boat runs out good. Uncle, self, full livewell & cooler of beverages maxed out the max weight capacity & she came right up on plane & got with the program. Very pleased with the boat & can't wait to get back out.

              Awesome!

We were there a couple hours early same day as you just messing around and caught a couple fish. More interested in running a little gas through the boat motor. If you didn't stop by the campground store you went by on way to launch and back out stop and get a hand dipped ice cream. They literally load the cone. Good stuff!
