BilletHead Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 Duane Doty and Blake Harris made the trip from the metropolis of the wider Branson area to visit yesterday. What a nice Suprise. Blake came wide eyed hearing stories of what Duane had seen here in past visits. Duane came bearing gifts even and he makes a good skinny Santa Claus. I had sent Duane a picture of big Louie and it came back in a different form. A loss of words from me is an understatement. Amazing, Then there was a bag of 2022 baits and one is a new color release and I think I'm the first to possess it , then there was a return of what I gave Duane a few years back. Some highly figured curly maple and a cherry burl. Now that you are turning pens you may want this back. The guy is like a savings account or a safety deposit box! More of another boomerang item in a few. So, Blake Harris is wanting to make and shoot a primitive self-bow. I brought out some made by me, and a couple gifted to me by a dear friend. We checked those out and three of the stone points I used to harvest deer with. Eyes got opened up even more when Blake said a want to do that too. It is a great feeling to see and be asked questions about something near and dear to my heart. About them Duane said Marty do you remember that Osage orange bow stave you gave me years ago? Yes, I do man that has been a long time ago. Well, I kept it and my brother had it for a while and I would like to give it to Blake. Again, the heart strings were tugged at. Well heck yes! Then it was out to the shop to break chert. Flintknapping is nothing that you are going to learn instantly. Which brings this up Duane also gifted a moose Billet I had gifted Duane a couple years ago. Blake is set now to carry on two new hobbies. Chert was flying off through the air with strikes of moose billets. A preform started to shape until I hit a platform and it broke in half where a tiny hidden fossil created a bad spot. Enough of the preform was left to make a small side notched dart point. Blake said he had been watching videos on knapping and he had seen and learned more watching me for the short time he had here. I really think he has the bug now and will be doing big things. I hope he picked up some things without being totally confused. Back into the house and broke out display cases of original old points Pat and I found hunting them which is another thing Blake likes to do. After that it was time for them to head back Southeast but not before I got Blake some chert for him to bash on learning his new trade. I am so blessed to have friends and make new friends from this forum. I can hardly wait until Blake makes his first self-bow and points. He now has an open-door policy to come back, and we will break some rock together. Foghorn Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 Thinking you might need to make your place a destination place kind of like a smaller version of SDC but with more craft and outdoor adventures Lots of neat projects and works of art. Not sure if Pat would want to wear the old costumes as a friend of mine from high school worked in those old outfits and said they were extremely warm. Ham, Terrierman, BilletHead and 1 other 4
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted December 21, 2022 Posted December 21, 2022 What an awesome story. I think most people actively on here know of Duane. But Blake, as you found out, is quite a nice guy as well. I've used his guide services twice now on Taneycomo. Just call Lilley's and they can set you up. My mom made me a Buckskinner type peasant shirt. I should try to find it. Not sure it would fit though. Pat bought What I would call a June Cleaver dress. I really like it, but she has not worn it out yet. I have Wards fedora hat and actually wear it out at times. I have had people I don't know women included complement me on it. What a hoot!
