netboy Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 The only problem with buying a rod online is that you can't get a hands on feel for the action and balance until it arrives. Be sure to order from a vendor that offers free returns.
fshndoug Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 I have almost totally quit going to BPS because of their high prices. Follow Glen's advice and look into Piscifun gear kjackson and tjm 2

Follow Glen's advice and look into Piscifun gear And their poor selection of fly tying materials. Little brother bought a rod ,reel and fly line from Piscifun for less than $100 on sale. Can't beat the price for what you get. fshndoug and laker67 2
laker67 Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 One of the best fly fishermen I know often bought BPS White River gear and whined if he had to pay more than about $89 for a rod. Foghorn and Daryk Campbell Sr 2
Members retired chem teacher Posted February 5, 2023 Author Members Posted February 5, 2023 I'm using most replies, and using BP gift certificate on something else. I found a Pflueger trion 1956 fly reel on line and bought it with backing, fly line , leader and tippet. Not sure about quality of reel, line, etc. I have a thing about buying old and new pflueger, ross, penn , and abu reels. and have given most to son and grandson. Anyone have any info on Pflueger 1956 fly reels? Good--bad?? From what I see on line it is a 5-6 wt reel?? It appears to be in good shape. Next will be getting a rod to match wt of reel. No clue what line, leader, and tippet it is spooled with. Next question, it is set up left handed--but I am right handed.. There seems to be some question about which is best for a right or left handed person. Changing it to right means removing line backing etc correct?? Sorry for all the questions but I gotten great info from this sight.
fishinwrench Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 I have a Pfluger Trion 1978 It balances out a St.C Legend Ultra 9 for 6 just perfectly. I've fished it pretty hard for about 10 years. No problems at all, love it.

I'm not familiar with that reel, but most disk drag reels seem to need the "one way clutch bearing" flipped over to change drag direction, it's usually fairly easy. The info that I saw in a quick search of it indicates yours is the 5-6 weight version and @fishinwrench's is the 7-8wt version so maybe he can tell about the drag change need.
fishinwrench Posted February 5, 2023 Posted February 5, 2023 Changing it from right to left hand is just a matter of flipping over the one-way bearing BEFORE you wind the backing and line on. These here are just as good, if not better, than the Pfluger Trion. At a fraction of the cost.

I bought a couple of their lines but I'm not a fan of them. They cast great, but too stretchy for my taste. FishnDave 1
