TroutBum4wt Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 Does anyone fish or have fished Spring Creek near Hurley? It looks very technical and challenging. Is there any public access or is it mainly a private land, "no trespassing" situation? trythisonemv 1 "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach
timsfly Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I actually fished that last week, it was very tough, caught more creek chubs than trout, only caught 2 small trout, I fished about 2 miles above hurley, on I think it is dodson cave road, not sure but it is above hurley, I did get water temps in the 60's. I did mangage to catch a few small largemouth bass and a few bluegill in the deeper areas. I put in a at a low water bridge and fish up, there are a lot of cattle fences up through there but it wasn't to hard to get thru. I fished maybe 4hrs and then went to crane creek, did better over there. Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop
TroutBum4wt Posted August 21, 2007 Author Posted August 21, 2007 Tim, What's your equipment setup, i.e. rod length, line weight and flies, for Spring Creek? Is it the same as Crane? What is the best water temp for trout in these small creeks/streams? Thanks "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach
timsfly Posted August 21, 2007 Posted August 21, 2007 I use a 6' 5wt or 4wt, I use lots of buggers and bigger nymphs, #10's are probably my most used size of both. 9' leaders most of the time. It is the same thing I fish on crane. 5X tippet most of the time, sometimes I'll drop down to 6X, temps in the mornings will be 58 or 59, by 12 p.m. some holes will show a 2 or 3 degree rise in temp, I have found a few spots were the temp was 65 last week or so in the 100 + days, I find most of my trout in areas of 58 or colder water, but in the little creeks there are a few small springs here and there and if you know where they are there are always a few fish around and the water can be a nice 57 right at the springs, depends on the spring, Tim Homesley 23387 st. hwy 112 Cassville, Mo 65625 Roaring River State park Tim's Fly Shop www.missouritrout.com/timsflyshop

I have a customer that told me this creek hold monsters and had pictures to back it up. He said closer to where it runs into a bigger creek is the best but below Hurley is great anywhere Terrierman, Johnsfolly and Gavin 2 1
Dutch Posted January 18, 2022 Posted January 18, 2022 The bigger creek is Crane Creek they meet a couple of miles below Hurley. There may be public access next year at Hurley. I’m trying to work out a deal with them. Daryk Campbell Sr, BilletHead, Johnsfolly and 3 others 4 2
