Waterfowl Season 2023-2024

Thank the Lord it's about that time. Figured I would start the annual post so we can share successes and failures.

Two days until doves and 10 days until teal across much of the Midwest. Not sure how much I'll get out for teal with a back injury I sustained, but I am going dove hunting Friday with a buddy. He is going to drive me right to the spot so it'll be easy on me. There are a TON of doves around right now so it should be an excellent opener.

Teal are here, and have been, since about 8/15 in my neck of the woods and further south. Water is looking fairly decent this year, but we need more rain as always. But, it is incredibly better than what it has been the last three years. This little mini drought we had is hurting some areas, but I've done some scouting before I got hurt, and a buddy has been hard at it, and there is plenty of public water out there.

I am more than ready for this heat to end and the shotguns to start blasting. Here's to hoping physical therapy gets me back in the game quickly!

Sorry you have broken down Ryan. I understand fully. Good luck on the doves, Pat and I won't be going out Friday morning but maybe afternoon if we get done with the morning plans.  Teal I am sure I will be going birds around or not.

Not fun at all. Luckily the private dove field will have a shuttle haha. I may try and hobble out for teal, but who knows. I'd rather be healthy for big duck. I will miss eating them, that's for sure.

Was a good opening day for doves for our group. Everyone either limited or got really close to it. Lots of birds flying until 9am or so.

We are out this evening. No go this morning. Not flying to well I have 5 and Pat 3. Her shot to kill ratio is better than mine. IMG_20230901_181337302_HDR.jpg

After I hunted waterfowl for around 30 years, I decided to spend most of my time fishing. It was fun back in the day with my lab. Now I only maybe once a year at my buddy's duck club. Actually, I'd rather just just call in the ducks and geese and watch the others shoot.

Two birds; one with the .410, one with the .28 gauge (pic below).  Had to let a lot of birds pass using the .410 during opening minutes.  It worked out fine, the Mrs. does not eat them.  Enjoyed the short time out there, tomorrow is another day.

Two more morning trips. Yesterday again in the cornfield that silage was taken off of. We shot 21. Quit about 8:30. We know where these birds are going to water. Checked it out later that afternoon. Would be a great shoot there. Too hot really but I might try one evening this week. ,

Back again this morning with a take of 18 between us. I really shot good with a 1.57 shot average per bird. Pat not so well this time. Again quit about 8:30. Dove is on the menu this afternoon. IMG_20230903_094409967.jpg

We like dove hunting but not the weather that goes with it.

Nice, guys! What are you going to make?

I haven't gotten out since the opener. I am in St. Louis and it's just too dang humid and I haven't scouted anything. Don't want to push myself too much traipsing through areas I haven't set eyes or boots on prior.

Maybe I'll head out to Busch Wildlife tomorrow with Hank..

Buuuuuuuurp  I suggest to try peppered dove if you ever have the chance. Hank Shaw recipe. Follow it to the T. Green peppercorn makes it. IMG_20230903_140120296.jpg
