Upland Hunting First!

Went out with my Brittany this morning to bird hunt for a while on one of my favorite prairie conservation areas. Was going for some quail but she kept working down into the woods along all the draws we were around. Finally I just said ok and we shoved off into them and then she locked up. Walked over and flushed a woodcock then proceeded to completely miss both shots. Reloaded and took two steps and second one got up and I was able to down it. We kept working down through the timber and ended up getting 5 total woodcock up and I was able to kill my 3 bird limit. This was a first for me, I have always known they would come through but I didn’t think it would be so much fun to hunt those darn things! We had an absolute blast, should have tried it before now, she worked those birds better than she has ever worked anything. Hunting them in the timber might kind of be her thing, to bad season ends next Tuesday. I will definitely be out after them again!

That's pretty neat, I have shot a lot of birds, but never a woodcock.

Yeah, what the heck !?!?!

Where did these suckers come from all of a sudden?  I feel cheated. 🫤

My hardass ol'man used to practically kick the lungs out of his dog for acting birdy over a fieldmouse.   Makes me wonder what he would have done if the dog had locked up on a woodcock 🤔

Yeah they're everywhere now.  Even showing up in people's houses for crying out loud.

I was pretty surprised by it all, I have flushed a couple here and there but always just one and it was usually by accident. I don’t know much about them at all but I guess they migrate through here just like doves. I would guess it is hit or miss hunting them, sometimes they are here and other times they aren’t. We definitely hit a stretch that some wanted to be in this morning. Sure was a good time, was a hunt for the memory books for sure!

I actually see and hear more as they go back north. I am sure others have heard them too and did not know what it was. They do courtship flights on way to nesting grounds.   I will attach a video from you tube. Turn sound up high. I used to watch this happen every year in a yimber road across from my house until it got screwed up. At dusk a woodcock would be on the ground and do a peent, peent, call and turn different directions doing it. then fly up in circles real high with a twittering sound. At it's apex it would tumble back down with a whistling noise. As soon as that happened, he would start again. It is really amazing to witness.

Just curious......Who was the first person to eat one and proclaim that they were a "game bird"?  🤔

You will never know. goes all the way back to hunter gatherers.  Anything was fair game. Anything so as not to starve.
