First Cicada Fly Fish

Are you asking....How do I know that the fish are highly unlikely to become selective to specific Cicada imitations?

Deductive reasoning, coupled with 40+ years of experience tying flys and eventually catching fish consistently, here in this region.

As ridiculous as it might seem, the larger the food item that trout get keyed into eating.....the less selective they always are.   Fish eating little 22-18 bugs typically get way more selective (or picky)  than fish eating Mice, Hoppers, ect.

Thank you!  Good to know that.  I'm going to try that when I'm down there in a couple weeks.  Looks like I need to tie up some stimulators and hoppers!

@fishinwrench you'd be surprised how well a Tiny Torpedo works at night there.

A Fat Albert or big chubby would work just fine. As you said, if they're eating big bugs, they're looking for a profile. One thing I've noticed with bigger foam flies with trout...they miss them a lot. The cicadas may be a real-life size 4, but the amount of hookups you're going to get on a size 4 fly is going to be way less than a size 6 or 8. I think it's just physics and fluid dynamics when they open their mouths for it.

I don't know... I'm doing pretty good so far.  I do think our cicada flies should be a bit bigger but not necessarily oversized, although I have no reason to say so- yet.  Too early in the game.

As I say in today's one cast, the only place I've found the trout taking them consistently is in the trophy area.  None below, although we are seeing them in our area every once in a while.  Hopefully they'll catch on.  But for now, the ones on the bluff below Lookout are keeping me entertained.

I was tying some "actual size" with foam bodies this weekend and the gap on a size 6  standard dry fly hook looked to small and flimsy for my preference. I settled on a Dai Riki 810 in size 4 (1x strong, standard shank, straight eye). An available equivalent would be a Gamakatsu B10S.
