Single Hook Only - above Fall Creek

Recommended Posts

When is it going to happen ?

The discussions are happening now.

Will you be ready ?

The tackle is easy to change - people - not so much.

I’d be happy if they enforced the existing rules.   Lotta power bait containers up there.

I agree fully.

Single hook? or single point hook? I would rather people use three single point hooks than to see them use a single treble hook.

I would have no objection to single point hooks statewide for all species. But agree that until enforcement catches up, all regulations are useless. I'll also say that place or species specific regulations are more difficult to apply than  general statewide regulations. The more specific the area the less apt people are to comply, they will just say "oh I don't know where Fall Creek is from here". Make the regulation fit the entire lake or the entire river or all trout water and the confusion is removed.

It would have no scientific backing. Every study you read, from the 1970s to now, says there is no difference in mortality between single hooks and treble hooks. Wouldn't bother me though, treble hooks are terrible at keeping fish hooked. I fish both flies and jerkbaits as well.

The real issues are what Pete noted and below:

  1. Outlet fishermen using their "Taneycomo rig" with amnesia line snagging fish during low DO events
  2. Boga grips splitting lower jaws
  3. Mishandling of fish once caught (see: squeezing the life out of them, dragging them on the rocks for pics

So, folks can keep bantering about treble hooks killing fish and ignoring the real reasons. Tale as old as time. Just because the White has it people think it's necessary around here. You know what AGFC stands for, right?

I believe treble hooks are legal on the White and other Arkansas trout waters with the following exceptions...Treble hooks must be barless in the C&R areas.

Multiple point hooks with barbs are allowed, unless fishing inside the Catch-and-
Release Areas (see below). Bait fishing only allowed with a single hooking point.

Yep, was referring to the C&R area. Should've clarified.

Oh, even better to squash the notion!

Here is a collection of various lures I have picked up in the C&R areas on the White and Norfork. Most of them were barbless, but not all. I usually find a lure or two while wading immediately after a sustained highwater event. Also recovered a couple anchors, an Orvis Battenkill Disc reel (in great condition) and a really nice drag chain.😀
