St. Louis sandwich recommendations

We've said before Gioia's has a James Beard Award for their original hot salami sandwich.  James Beard is kind of the Medal of Honor for cooking.   Back when, way back, me and my dago buddies that hired me would get one and eat in the Berra park across the street.

Amighetti?  They were great and eveywhere.  Terrific bread, meat, toppings, dressing.  Totally top shelf, but not at all hard to find.

As for me, I never ever go to St. Louis without stopping on The Hill - for Gioias.  Hot Salami on Italian White, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Mayo, Mustard.

Let's face it Subway sandwiches do suck. Even for cheap sandwiches there are better options.

I did some work in Bellville Ontario once, it's about 2 hours east of Toronto.  Stayed there for a week.  There were not too many places in that burg to eat.  The hotel I was staying at had some of the worst food, outside of the Army, that I have ever had in my life. The other couple of restaurants in that town were just about as bad. There was a Subway, fortunately, and that's what I lived on while I was there.

I can eat them (Subway), but compared to the mom and pop sub places that are all over the northeast, they can't hold a candle.

If your Subway sandwich sucks then it's YOUR FAULT 😅

They build them exactly how you tell them to, ya know?

Not when they are ordered in for meetings or school promotions which is the only way I have had Subway in the last 10 or 15 years.

In an airport, Subway moves up several notches..

I still would disagree. I have been travelling a lot for work over the last few years and there are a lot of viable decent food options in most airports. You're going to pay for it, but you would even for a Subway sandwich.

If you go to business meetings HUNGRY and expecting to enjoy a delicious meal...... You're just out of my league!   😅

My mom was from PA and up there they called them hoagies.  Wash it down with a birch beer. :D

Meetings where we all get together and end up with a lunch of some kind are almost a thing of the past. With Zoom and Teams we just don't do 'em that way much anymore. We used to get Panera a lot, which was decent.

Rick’s recommendations are solid; Gioia’s is worth the trip - can’t think of anywhere that can beat them.  The original is down on The Hill and if you venture there you will be surrounded by great Italian food.  Looks like they have a couple outlet locations closer to where you will be as well.

Hoagies, yep.

I was in Philly once for work, got a cheesesteak deal at the market that is downtown.  It was pretty good, but the Philly types told me that was tourist food.

My one and only PA hoagie experience.  If it was a hoagie.

Never have had birch beer.

Just got off the phone with @Gavin. He's recommending Gioia's too. I think that's what we'll do, and probably will do the Hill rather than the 'burbs. We've got most of the day. Now I need to figure out if we'll eat dinner before the 7:30 show too.
