Opening day at Bennett Spring circa 1945

Got to love the old cars in the video.

We used to fish Bennett when we lived in Florissant in the late 50's and early 60's but never went for opening day. There were lots of characters down there. I remember meeting Pete and Marie Cento who each held the Missouri record rainbow trout record back then.

 I don't doubt that at all, but you see them and not the ones who passed too early in life. 

I see those sexy hippers. I would like to see that box of flies you are looking into. I remember the first couple of times I went to Bennitt and had no waders and tried to wet wade. True torture. Next couple of times those plastic thin as heck ones. Soon they became torture. took me awhile to get neoprene. Sticky tight fitting like in wetsuit type. You know exactly what I mean. Then Bass pro breathable that lasted awhile. Finally, we graduated to Simms not to be confused with Sims  and never looked back.

Yep, smoking took my Dad from lung cancer in his early 60's.

Not that smoking tobacco does a person any good......But the medical community just LOVES to blame as much as they can on "smoking".     

Nevermind the hair spray, nail polish & remover, scented candles, auto exhaust, household cleaners, etc. etc. that we are all huffing constantly 🙄 

I had a buddy that would immediately run 40' away if I reached for a cigarette.......but I'd stop by his house and he would be out there standing over a burn barrel, stirring & poking it with a stick, while he burned plastic bottles and assorted household trash.      100% a victim of typical brain programming. 🙄

We used to go to the open at Bennett all the time.   We were teenagers at the time and got our spots early right below the main bridge.  Mid to late 70’s I guess.   Two guys come down and told my buddy the governor is here and would like to squeeze in and fish.  My buddy told them, well he should’ve gotten up earlier.  We all laughed as they walked back up to the parking lot.

My grandpa used to say that he would never vote for anyone that doesn't have a fishing license in his billfold.  😊

Opening day was a family tradition when we lived in Jefferson City.  Three camper loads worth of adults and kids from 6 on up.  Everybody went to Weavers, got new 3 pound Dai Riki line on their rigs and we all used the same black and yellow jigs.  We'd fish as a group at the hole where the handicap ramp is.  Always there in plenty of time to get our spots before the siren.  We'd make it a point to catch a limit of trout as fast as we could, clean them in the spring, then go have bacon, fried potatoes and fried trout for breakfast.  Loved watching kids fishing off the whistle bridge later in the day, still do given the chance. Those were good times.  

Same group was known to frequent Montauk which was better for teaching kids how to actually fish.  Better Campground and dining lodge too.
