Is This The New Normal

It has always been here people in February put in applications to clean rooms or throw canoes then draw unemployment in the Winter when they might do nothing or maybe cut Firewood. 

Never felt bad about it because this was just normal. 

My Granddaughter has one application at the park. My wife told her several places that are needing help.

She just is not interested in working. 

I was wanting to say something to her but my wife said no this is the New normal, kids are not interested.

It’s not just kids. Getting harder and harder to find anyone that wants to work. 
 

Hired a kid in KC. He started on Wednesday and I just happened to be there that day. As I was leaving he shook my hand and thanked me for giving him a chance. What a great thing this was going to be for his family. He seemed genuinely happy and thankful. He went home at the end of the day and we haven’t seen him since. And that is the new norm. Won’t show up for interviews, won’t show up for drug tests. Some that make it through all of that don’t ever show up for their first day. Or they work a day or two and quit. These are not difficult jobs. 8-5 M-F. NO WEEKENDS! And they pay well. It’s been a struggle for a bit and it’s not just with kids. It’s everyone.

Know a guy at the Barrel Plant had a chance to go to College. 

He said why? He is working a Job he likes and making good money. 

I use to think this way but see many ways a degree helps. 

My wife is over many in the office and has problems with some. She will give them a list of stuff to do and it never gets done but they get evaluated and let go if they are not doing their Job. 

Pretty cool live with parents they die collect something they never work for.

We struggle at the mill big time.   We pay Really well but it’s tough work and horrible hours.  We run 3 shifts Monday through Friday.   Even if you’re inside the mill is open on 3 sides.

We've been trying to hire an accountant for several months, and it's been unusually tough even with the internet and headhunters, etc. Great job, great company, great people, great pay and benefits. Why so hard? We finally hired a guy who came from public accounting (think accounting firm doing audit and taxes) a couple weeks ago.

Public accounting is a tough row to hoe the first few years. Long hours, travel, etc. The firms weed them out pretty quickly if they don't measure up. I thought, but didn't say anything because it wouldn't help and doesn't really affect me, that this guy we hired must not have made the grade in public. Bailing on his old job in the busy season (year end audits, taxes) didn't seem like a guy that made the cut or had the work ethic or smarts. I guess we'll see. 

There's some anxiety where I work about all this, and it's particularly important because there's four of us long timers that are all ready and able to retire and probably a half dozen other key people that are within a few years. I'm fortunate in that I've got a really good heir apparent that I'm doing transition/succession work with. But there are some key areas that aren't covered and it's exceptionally hard to find folks these days. 

And.. the work ethic has really deteriorated the last few years. The whole work-from-home thing seems to have changed the culture. Folks either not being in the office at all or blowing in at 8:30, 9:00, whatever they feel like. Hell, I've peed three times by 9:00!  Then there's the way folks dress and the tats. We've got a chick that is covered in what look like jailhouse tats and I've seen her wear tank tops a couple times. What the hell? 

Maybe it's just the old man in me coming out.

I’ve got one like that in St. Peter’s. Some days she’s dressed up like Rosie the Riveter. Little tiny chick in a predominantly male industry and she fits right in. Also sings backup in a Neil Diamond cover band.
