Dutch Posted July 9 Posted July 9 They have invaded my bird feeders short of lead poisoning is there anything I can do?
tjm Posted July 9 Posted July 9 A web search suggests to try taking the perches off the feeders and stop feeding sunflower seeds, feed only thistle or the upside down suet feeders.
Ryan Miloshewski Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I shoot at them, but when they're really thick I use smaller feeders so they have trouble. I also shoo them off when I can and use safflower seed. Cardinals/Chickadees/Titmice like (not love) safflower and grackles do not. Swapping from sunflower to thistle is not a good idea, as only finches prefer it. Others will eat it occasionally, but it's not preferred at all. I'd go to safflower gradually (half sunflower/half safflower), remove any platform or bigger feeders, and keep the pellet gun handy. “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold

Starlings are worse, too, IMO. They are like feral hogs or locusts. nomolites 1 “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold

fishinwrench Posted July 9 Posted July 9 I popped a starling the other day, and when I went out to pitch it across the road I could see thousands of tiny parasites crawling around under its belly skin. They are infected with something. It was gross !
tjm Posted July 9 Posted July 9 starlings are legal to kill any where any time in USA, grackles are not. BilletHead and Greasy B 2
