51 degrees when I pulled out the driveway to a patch of walnut trees on a neighbor's farm. There is a picnic table there with scattered walnut trees around. As the sun came up the squirrel began to move. I found out quickly they were only going to one specific tree to grab a walnut and take off back to bigger timber to start cutting that hard shell. A sound once you hear it you never forget that sound.  From that table I would key in on that sound and begin to stalk and find out where it was coming from. Thick enough underbrush I was kinda noisy. Sometimes my quarry would stay still cutting that nut and sometimes he or she would move off trying to hide again. I seen five and got four.  Quite morning you could hear things in the distance for miles . I rate this a high quality morning. You could even see you breath while exhaling. Blessing for the month of August.  Have I told you how much I like to hunt squirrel with the air rifle? More Pictures of the meal prep on what's cooking.IMG_20250826_075233862.jpgIMG_20250826_102258342_HDR.jpgIMG_20250826_155937972.jpgIMG_20250826_163725040.jpg

Looks good.  I have a new under lever Umarex 22 sitting around that needs to be sited in.  Spring air, but solid barrel to breech.  Supposed to be accurate.  I still like a .22 lr for the tree rats, but I have killed them with the pellets when I was too young for powder rifles.

There's just something about hearing that pellet hit your meal....."WHAP !"

And then all the other critters in the area are like.... "Look at that idiot falling out of the tree for no reason"  😅

Let us know how it works out. I have tried springers and not had much luck with real accuracy. Yours might be a better one. A good scope is a must. Springers are hard on scopes. .22 firearm is the gold standard when it comes to squirrel I know but don't underestimate the power of a PCP air rifle. Accuracy with a fine-tuned one is off the charts. Plus, so quiet. Slugs with a barrel made for shooting them are even better than pellets.

Nice! Love squirrel hunting and eating them. I'm going to do this, this Saturday. Break out the old Marlin .22

Our season doesn't start until Sept 2nd for squirrel and you can only hunt on sunday in a couple of counties. We do have two subspecies of fox squirrel out this way. The Delmarva fox squirrel is off limits. They look like big light gray plush toy squirrels. The northern fox squirrel is fair game and a different subspecies than the eastern Fox squirrel in MO and I may try and get one or more this year. I hunted big fox squirrels in MO during the first few seasons and cooked them for hours to soften them up. Now I prefer to only shoot the juvenile fox and grays.

Two of these squirrels were old. Old Grays can be as tough or tougher than fox. A big baller and a old female that had had many litters. About 2.5 hours and these fell off the bone. Braising actually makes them go quickly at the simmer. If you are just frying like you said the younger the better!
