Members gwh Posted September 11 Members Posted September 11 Heard from two workers last night that MDC fired the general contractor yesterday. They indicated all the subs contractors are packing up and pulling off the job. There were people emptying the GC's trailer at 6:30 last night. This morning there were quite a few MDC cars and trucks at there construction trailer. They also told us that there is a crack in the new wall at the intake that is leaking. Did not see anyone from MDC to confirm, has anyone heard any thing? BilletHead 1
fishinwrench Posted September 11 Posted September 11 There has obviously been something going on with that project that isn't being shared publicly. 🙄
jdmidwest Posted September 11 Posted September 11 Low bidder does not always give the best work. But that is how the game is played. snagged in outlet 3 and tjm 2 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Gavin Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Schell Osage CS was supposed to reopen years ago and Columbia Bottom CA has been all but abandoned. It might take a few more years for Bennett.
oneshot 1 Posted September 12 Posted September 12 Well they had a lousy season and I would say it is Construction. The wood bridge is another thing. They was telling us at a meeting they was going to do away with it. We convinced them it was needed. We'll we'll just have to make it better. I'm thinking like the Whistle Bridge. Well after it was done I went down there. Seen it and first thing I thought was are you kidding! Same old bridge. First good rain moved it. They wanted the Contractor to come back and fix it for nothing. Nope can not do. From what I understand their going to fix it where you can no longer drive to where the spring runs into the river. oneshot
fishinwrench Posted September 12 Posted September 12 It seems like they are biding their time, awaiting some cataclysmic event that can be blamed.....so that no one in particular will be implicated. Once that happens, to clear the air & reset liabilities...... THEN all will be patched up, and life can go on. snagged in outlet 3 and Daryk Campbell Sr 2
Members Xraydude Posted September 12 Members Posted September 12 Interestingly, I read recently on OFF newsletter that the project was scheduled to wrap up in January ‘26. It’s called oversight. If you have a multi million, multi year project, someone from MDC has to sit in on progress meetings and validate. I feel the MDC treats this park on scale with a dried oxbow along the Mississippi.
tjm Posted September 12 Posted September 12 That's a surprise. I would have thought they'd just pile on more time and more money. That is the usual route with low bid construction. Some contractors seem to count on it when bidding. No surprise that the subs are pulling out though they have no contract with the state and the GC is their paymaster. If the GC goes there's nothing left for any of the subs. Probably double the cost of the project by the time another contractor is found and all the work done over, or least fully inspected and repaired, Might take years as has been said, and it might take decades. Entertaining to speculate anyway. Shame that governments use low bidders rather than qualified bidders. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

To my knowledge there's been nothing claimed that they just went with the lowest bidder. It was a decision of whether to just "maintain the park" or try to turn the stream into a giant trout hatchery......and they chose the later.

Maintaining the park falls on DNR, MDC just deals with the fish and the hatchery. Perhaps some stream work that would affect the fish. Any decision about maintaining the park would be one of to do or not to do by DNR which is politically dependent so on the Politicians.
