So there's that, not to disrespect in any way a long running Evinrude. Those Yamaha Pro 50's were darn good outboards. It should be a crime that factory support on parts for them are going away. Whatever remains on dealer shelves today is all that is left. And parts for the predecessor of the Pro Series (known as the Precision Blend series) are already completely obsolete. Tilt/trim components are obsolete. Oil injection components are NLA.....and sadly you cannot convert a Yamaha to run pre-mix fuel, because the oil isn't metered into the fuel....it is injected through the intake manifold. No more pistons, rings, or reeds.....So sadly the powerheads aren't rebuildable anymore 🙄 Lower unit seal kits are available, but if you need gears, clutch, shafts, or bearings.... you're out of luck. The biggest problem with all Japanese made outboards is that they are all designed with the assumption that they will be used in Saltwater...... therefore are only expected to last about 10 years max. And sadly Mercury has taken the same path. Nothing mechanical can last very long in a saltwater environment.... that's just a fact. 🤷♂️ Evinrude/Johnson was the ONLY outboard manufacturer who designed motors for freshwater use.....and designed them to last. And BRP has promised to continue that support. Parts are still available for J/E outboards dated all the way back to the 1950's, with very few exceptions.

JFTR increasing or decreasing the high speed orifice in the carbs should only be done to compensate for changes in elevation. There's zero performance advantage otherwise.....and it can actually deminish performance by fouling plugs and accelerating carbon buildup, if oversized jets are installed.....Or by increasing combustion chamber temperature (eventually melting a piston), if a lesser jet size is installed. There ARE ways to increase performance on those 9.9-15 HP motors (Hotrod them).....but doing so significantly decreases their lifespan.

It means that's what the Flippin Fireman who sold me the boat and motor said. And it is the best running 9.9 I've been around. I'll be 74 in April. It won't need much more of a lifespan to outlast me. fishinwrench, Daryk Campbell Sr and grizwilson 3
Dewayne French Posted March 6 Posted March 6 I will have to look this weekend it is at the farm. I know it is an off brand 4 blade. It seems to do better than any of the trophy and tempest props I have tried. It is not a fast boat/motor combo, but so far very reliable. I have had it since 2016 as a back up boat for when I sell my newer basscat. The motor has done me well, very hard to start if it has set for months and it leaks some fuel around the carb gaskets for the first few times of use. Then it seems to seal up and even the morning startups are way better. I need the seats re-done they are horrid, it was not took care of by previous owner. fishinwrench 1

I was quite impressed with the speed and response it had for a 9.9 and 3 people on the boat. I took in a 285 Stratos with a 150 Intruder, and it has a 26p Raker on it. Stratos is a fairly heavy boat and that sounds like way too much prop to me. Yes that does sound to big a pitch I know the 4 blade trophy plus 26P I tried was hard to plane out and did not help top end. The tempest was a 3 blade but i cant remember the pitch to long ago. I will try to remember to look this afternoon when we go feed. I used to keep a ski tow bar on it and it did great pulling my teenage stepsons one at time on a inflatable and they were not small 6' gym types fishinwrench 1
grizwilson Posted March 7 Posted March 7 My 1983 Mariner(Yamaha) has never needed parts other than water pump impellers......but it is a two stroke obviously. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
Dewayne French Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Okay I got a picture of it over the weekend. It is a 19 pitch 4 blade powertech ELE4R19PMS275. I guess that would be the reason it works so well just not a good top end. And also why it pops the boys on so well on the tube. Hope this helps. nomolites and fishinwrench 1 1

This Stratos needs a 23p in my opinion, but I'll just let whoever buys it worry about swapping it out. Thanks for the feedback 👍 Dewayne French 1
Dewayne French Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Anytime, Sir sorry it took a little longer than I planned. I got busy at farm Friday night/Saturday and with church Sunday so I got behind on my fishing job😉. That 23p is kind of what I was thinking my rig need just did not have the extra money to play with. If I ever do I will let you now how it goes. fishinwrench 1
