  1. Update. Today I dry fit the seat, so that I could drill the holes it will hang from, and protect them wirh varnish along wirh the inside. I've installed the outer gunwales, and the decks. The decks kinda took the arrowhead shape on their own. I did file them down to allow water to escape since I did not cut scupper into the inner gunwales. First coat of varnish applied this evening.
  2. What a catch. Sorry to hear about the lucky hat. Congrats to you both for persevering and making it happen. Even if I was wanting a 40" striper, I would be just happy as I could be with a ray. Those saltwater fish fight different.
  3. I get the joke the Dr is saying, but not the backstory.
  4. Simple leftover rotisserie chicken. Shredded with a star tool usually used to separate ground beef. Wife got the tip from someone else, thought I would share here. Works like a dream.
  5. I read the whole article. I'm curious. If inwas to season multiple layers wirh a low smole point oil, then later after many uses exceed the smoke point of the original or middle layers, would the seasoning be damaged? I didn't seem to read anything on that idea.
  6. I enjoy my blackstone. Got my Father's Day gift delivered yesterday.
  7. What is a mini split? I assume it's something for the septic, but I've never been on one.
  8. I am grateful as well. Coming up on 2 years since my injuries and am walking much better. While the costs were debatable, I am much better than without doctors, hospitals, ambulance, paramedics, insurance, concerned Great Samaritans etc. I say thank you to all involved in any way. Edited to add: physical therapists. They were/are amazing people. It seems so negligible, but it moves mountains.
  9. I follow a YouTube waterman crabber. He was trying to figure out a way to benefit from catching blue catfish in Maryland. He had a decent homeade system started, but I don't believe there was enough monetary interest. The blue cats' population seem to be exploding with no natural predators. They are being blamed for lots of issues up there.
  10. Suspended all fishing. Due to drought. https://www.wric.com/news/northern-virginia/shenandoah-national-park-suspends-all-fishing-effective-immediately/
  11. Thank you guys. This info sure helps make it much less intimidating to make the first trip.
  12. He was participating in a colony, spying on others.
  13. If you are familiar with the song This Cowboy's Hat by Chris Ledoux, this post will make sense. If not I posted a link at the bottom. Great song. I went to a local pond this evening by myself, but I wasn't alone. I was fishing using a method @Johnsfolly taught me. I was using a jig a got from a chance meeting with @Jungle Jim or @JUNGLE JIM 1. To keep ol' @snagged in outlet 3 at bay I made sure to take some pictures. And to keep my buddy @BilletHead satisfied I took a picture of the jig before I lost it. I didn't lose it by the way. The rod is a new toy I found. It reduces very small and expands to supposedly 140 cm (55 ish inches) tenkara style rod. Added 4 pond line just longer than the rod. The line wraps around the round foam disk. I use loops at the end of the line to swap flies quickly.
  14. @Skeeter ZX190. Awesome information thank you.
  15. I appreciate that, but, I'm not new here. I'm sure I've hijacked and sidetracked a few over the years. Sometimes the new conversations are better than the original. I really hope to inspire someone else to do something that you want, but are hesitating. Whether it's a canoe, which is how I found OAF believe it or not, flint knapping, bee keeping, photography, cooking, lure building etc. We have many talents within the group. I would love to see more posts of what interests people have.
  16. Happy to hear that. I woukd think you could still add a trellis, no?
  17. Spent the warm evening out in the garage. Got my canoe seat complete. I reinforced it with aluminum angle. I somehow mis measured it. It is tight as a drum.
  18. Decks are going to be some wood scavenged from my parents' house. I'm not really sure what it is. It is an old set of 2 steps. I don't even know what it was used for. It looks similar to a homeade version of pet steps to assist pets to get onto furniture. I believe it is another hardwood, not sure though. The thwart will be cut out of the pine board in the pictures. It held me at 250ish pounds. It should support the canoe upside down while carrying. @ness, I'm not sure who Kip is. Is that Woodman's name?
  19. Great discussion. I really do wonder if they can determine sounds of certain frequency, but not others. Or do they have super hearing that we cannot pick up? Do trolling motors give a weird vibration that is annoying to fish, possibly? Maybe it isn't the sound at all. We all wonder if our lures are going to entice a fish to bite. But, what is it about our presentation that draws them away from hundreds or thousands of baitfish? If they aren't eating the baitfish actively, why are we arrogant enough to believe our lure should be bitten?
  20. Yes, I'm interested in seeing it, as well as progress.
  21. So, the epoxy was applied thick and I had other things to do and it got some thick runs. That's not abnormal. Next step was to sand that down. 80 grit with electric sander to 120, to 150 and 220 by hand with multiple items used as sanding blocks. Pool noodle sections work very well. Next shows my Slide Board. It is what inused to transfer or slide from my wheelchair to another thing to sit on, couch, chair, bed etc. Since it was a major factor in my life during the canoe build, I wanted to incorporate it. It will be cut down to be the thwart/handle. Next you get to see my collection of clamps. One thing I've learned while building boats and canoes is, you can never have enough clamps. Truer words may never have been spoken. I believe I own over 90 clamps. I can tell you, it would be nice to have more. If I was a thinking man, I would have worked on the seat and frame while I was sitting doing nothing for a couple months. Well, as 'ol Forrest Gump once said, "I'm not a smart man...". I will be webbing the seat and later may decide to update it to a caned seat. Winter project. That brings us to this evening's progress update. I've installed the port side inner gunwale. They are cherry wood. I need to figure out the decks, and if I want to try closing in the ends, as they are not great to look at. And quite honestly, I'm OK with that. Gotta keep moving. Decks, outer gunwales, varnish, seat and thwart. It's getting close.
  22. Hopefully the pending sale goes smoothly. I'm currently building mine, and really looking at another option. I'm really liking the NuCanoe Ultimate and they now have the U10 which is a 10'10" version. They are canoe/kayak hybrids. I've been wanting one for quire a few years, but just out of justifiable price range. Soon...
