  1. Not a bad thing to do if it's convenient for both buyer and seller (as if there's likely to be a Evinrude dealer within 10 miles of the sellers house). That info can be misleading though, because let's face it.... we're dealing with computers here . A readout may show 42 over-revs and 11 overheats, but the reality can very well be that it had a bad crankshaft position sensor, failing voltage regulator, or a bad temp sensor once upon a time. When you start applying computers onto mechanical devices your "history data" don't mean squat. The procedure for testing the warning horn circuit automatically logs an overheat and a NO OIL condition into the ECM history.
  2. Nope. I use a no-slip loop knot on everything #14 and larger. A figure-8 knot for the tiny stuff.
  3. I have been a Johnson/Evinrude fan since birth. They have a few designs out there that I'm not too crazy about, but I have way more respect for OMC/Bombardier as a manufacturing company than I do any of the others. I see way more of a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction in the Evinrude motors. No doubt they'd be #1 in the world if it wasn't for the underhanded, low down rotten $#!t that Mercury Marine pulls.
  4. It's tough when you don't have time to experiment. Typically it takes me 3 days to put together a solid pattern if I'm going in cold.
  5. 8ga. is good. Don't use wire nuts, use yellow butt connectors and seal with liquid tape. Use a 50amp breaker at the battery on the positive side. If the TM doesn't need to be removed from the boat then just eliminate the plug and wire it direct with the butt connectors.
  6. Making drastic changes during the day never has really worked for me, but making seemingly minor (subtle) changes while sticking predominantly to the initial game plan has paid off plenty of times. A change in retrieve, or a change in weight that speeds up or slows down the sink rate of my bait has made a definite improvement in the number of bites on plenty of occasions. I only fish water that is 8' deep or less during Spring and Fall, and 18' deep or less in the Summer and Winter, so that automatically reduces the lake down to a more managable size. If I make a long run (10 miles or more) then it is only to get to water that has more or less color to it. If the water where I'm launching at has the right color, and I can catch fish in it, then odds are that I am gonna fish within 5-7 miles of there all day. On those days when you just know you're getting your butt kicked the best thing I have found to do is to put the rods down, sit down and eat a sandwich and just chill for 30 minutes to an hour....or however long it takes to regain confidence in your ability to figure something out. You think differently on your butt than you do on your feet. Haven't you ever sat at home after a day of taking a beating and thought "Dang, I shoulda done this or that"?
  7. The Salt river tribs were lousy with them when I was a kid. That was back when all the rivers were a literal trash dump. As I got older, and the rivers got allegedly "cleaner" we kinda stopped finding them. We seined for minnows and crawdads sometimes to bait limblines, and had 4 mudpuppy's in the bucket. My grandpa baited 3 of his best sets with them during a time when the flatheads were biting real good, but none of them got eaten so he determined that "fish just don't eat them". The ones we used to find looked different than the one you're holding, ours were always real dark, almost black with no spots or stripes, and red gills. And only about 5-6" long. Don't think I've ever seen one as thick and colorful as the one you're holding. Is there more than one species?
  8. Rebuild it. The parts are cheap.....and what else do you have to do this Spring besides plant hostas and fish ?
  9. Ok so all the girls went to KC for the P!NK concert, ($$$$$!!!!! ) and it was raining here, so I pulled the screen out of the kitchen window so I could shoot dinosaurs. Was having a blast until I knocked a tin of 500 pellets into the garbage disposal. I guess I don't have to tell you what I did for the rest of the day.
  10. Pretty sure my new handle should be "Scope Buster" Pretty soon, me and everyone at Pyramyd Air and Leapers will be on a first name basis.
  11. A quality 3-9x40AO scope will bring it's capability to life. As for how far it'll shoot? Well I'm gut shooting these dinosaurs at 55yds. and taking their heads off at 30yds. According to my ballistic chart it is still hitting at 12.37ft/lbs. at 50 yards with the pellets I am using. (it takes 4 to scramble rabbit brains, 6 to scramble a squirrels, and 11-12 to scramble a coon's or a groundhog's).
  12. The thing feels solid, it's accurate as all hell, and it hits as hard as any other .22 break barrel out there. I have yet to find a pellet that it doesn't shoot well, whatever you stuff in the barrel it shoots it straight. What more do you need to hear? I have about 400 pellets thru mine so far and haven't even had a single flyer. I smoked the first Simmons 4x32 22Mag scope, so I exchanged it for another one. I haven't even tried the Center Point POS that comes with the gun. Take your phone with you and show the cashier the 68.00 price on Wal-Mart.com and they'll match it. There's a easy trigger mod using either a 8mm bearing from a hobby store (or a piece of ball point pen barrel) that results in a trigger pull even better than the Charlie Tuna trigger. You'll want to do that because the stock trigger configuration is a long creepy disaster.
  13. If the water is so rough that I can't stand on the deck without getting tossed then I either step down in the floor and brace a knee on the console, or I go find some calmer water. Fish are everywhere, no need to frustrate yourself by trying to fish a mainlake point on the 4th of July weekend.
  14. Have you tried standing? I don't know how anyone can sit and fish. I don't even like to sit and eat.
  15. My dad had one of those Winchester mod94 John Wayne edition lever guns, it was real pretty. I said, let's go shoot this thing. He says, Naw I don't wanna get it dirty. I said, I'll clean it. Nope, he wasn't having any part of it. So I said, If I was John Wayne I'd kick you in the knee. He says, "If you was John Wayne they'd be giving them away in a box of Cracker Jack's. Now put it away and go shoot the Marlin"
  16. Who's gonna fill their shoes?
  17. Well somebody needs to try it. The dang thing has been around since I graduated from High School and it still hasn't been taken fishing. I'm assuming that the warranty has expired.
  18. Sounds like your water pump pressure/volume was down also. Any piece of debris small enough to make it to the valve part of the thermostat wouldn't cause an overheat. Just the opposite, it would cause the motor to take longer to warm up to operating temp, and if anything it would cause it to run hotter at idle.....not the other way around.
  19. Imagine that, a man with a 40' cruiser out entertaining his accountant. Definitely a write off!
  20. Good deal. Odd though, because you said it was doing the "beep beep beep beep" instead of the "Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep". The intermittent beep is oil/fuel sensors, and the continuous beep is the Overheat sensor. Just for future knowledge, the smallest passageways in the cooling system are the water intake holes and the pisser outlet. If nothing is blocking the intakes....and there's a pee stream coming out, then there's likely no debris "clogging the cooling system".
  21. Pump your fuel primer bulb up and keep it squeezed tight while looking for a leak. If you can't detect any leaks check your engine oil level to see if it appears over-full. I assume that you are seeing a slick on the water? Are you sure it's fuel? Could be tilt/trim fluid or gear lube leaking from the lower unit. Best to get it taken care of before you get too far from the ramp. I mean the reason you bought a 4-stroke was for fuel economy, low emmissions, and quietness......right? By running it, you're throwing the first two reasons out the window. And if you think it's quiet now just keep running it like that and it'll get even quieter. They are the quietest thing on Earth when they won't run.
  22. Oh it's coming. You'd better stay away from this thread or I'll burn your eyes like I did Marty's
  23. Bassboats can use it ok. Pontoons and powerboats with longer trailers have some trouble. As always, watch your sonar for rock piles when trailering and raise the motor accordingly.
