  1. Efficiency as far as size and numbers of fish brought to hand is not where the payoff of flyfishing lies. If you are looking for "efficiency" then live bait and 20# line would be the way to go. Just as rifle hunters turn to bowhunting and compound bowhunters turn to recurve/longbows....Sportsmen eventually, after a certain amount of success will look for ways increasingly more gratifying to feed their egos. In this day and age we aren't fishing to stockpile food, and most of us aren't even trying to fill a bag with 5 of the heaviest fish in the lake. I went back to flyfishing after I realized that cranking down on multiple 4-7lbers with heavy tackle and swinging them over the gunnels like a 9" crappie didn't excite me anymore, and also realizing that after a day of doing well I really didn't feel a sense of accomplishment. Even if I placed well in a tournament and took some money home it was still less than I could have made by rebuilding someones outboard. I'd much rather take your money by working on your boat/motor than to TRY to beat you at fishing on any random day. I'm way more confident in my engine repairing skills than I am my fishing prowess. I get remembered everytime someone turns a key to start their motor. They either think kindly of me when it fires right up....or cuss me when it doesn't. But the guys whose money I've taken by getting bigger bites than they did once upon a time....they probably forgot my name before they even got home. So flyfishing is about Me feeling good about what I'm doing. The construction of the flies and leaders, the placement of the cast, the manipulation of the flies, ect. It is just so much more involved and harder to do, so when I succeed it makes me happier than catching the same (or more) fish using conventional gear. You can't deny the elitist aspect of flyfishing because it truly is a graduation of technique and mindset that is advanced compared to other forms of sportfishing. What other form of fishing requires as much preparation, practice, skill, stamina, and problem solving in order to be successful, regardless of the species you are targeting? It's all about the personal payoff. But even at that it isn't enough for me to just be "fishing with a flyrod" since drifting midges under a indicator with a flyrod takes less skill than huckin' a roostertail all day. Some forms of "flyfishing" can be pretty lame in the payoff category.
  2. "Rented crankbaits". Yeah right. Pffft! I think that legendary tale was carried over from the old ads in F&S. I have my doubts about the reality of it.
  3. Drifting down in the jon boat, or canoeing? I haven't been on it since the flood. Have a good trip.
  4. I think the Wilson bend area of Lake O is the scorpion capital of Missouri, everyone I know that lives in that area has a scorpion problem. They seem to have a weird fetish for sinks and bathtubs. I had a "hatch" of them at my place the Summer after the tornado ripped through here. Everything I picked up had a scorpion under it, so they are around, but I seldom see one since.
  5. A 1/16oz marabou crappie jig was the first bait that I became intimate with. It got bit everywhere, by everything, and under all conditions.
  6. I have to have diversity. I go through phases with different species and alternate randomly. I love them all but it's like pulling teeth to get me to go chase smallies (for example) when I'm on a white bass kick. Or to go chase whites when I'm going through a trout phase. I've never been even the least bit interested in anything salty simply because it's out of my reach and I'd never be able to do it long enough or often enough to "phase" it.
  7. When they did up the cinnamon pork rinds I was beside myself. Brilliant!
  8. The name is about as accurate as the rest of it. Kinda like Starlight cr.
  9. Jesus! I never really thought about that but you are right. What a bunch of frikken weido's. I think I feel a suppressed memory coming on....
  10. There are plenty of redneck things in my life that I don't have the strength to give up. Like.... Country Crock tupperware and Cool Whip cereal bowls. Pickle jar tea glasses. And I cannot throw a Folgers can away even though it doesn't come in 'cans' anymore. I did manage to give up my phone book collection though. Have you ever tried to burn a 3'tall stack of phone books? They are paper, right? Then WTH won't they burn? They are like possessed witchcraft manuals or something.
  11. Joe, I don't think it matters where you went to school in the 70's, all lunch ladys looked like that. So did the gals in the office....oh wait, the gals in the office WERE the lunch ladys. Remember that paddle with the 3/8" holes in it? You heard it whistle, then WHAPP! Again, and again, and again.... (don't cry) There's a special place in hell for elementary school principles of the 70's
  12. That Champ is sweet! There's one of those old Ouichita's for sale just up the road from me, pretty clean and I think it has a 40 Johnson and a sign that says 2250.00 OBO on it.
  13. Wow that was fast.....Scratch the 3hp (top pic) it's been spoken for.
  14. The way I read it you have at least 4 to choose from within this thread. The "cross-talk" is generating hits that increases your odds for even more leads. Just chill and go with it. 3hp 300.00 4 or 6hp 200.00 or 525.00 Fixer upper 4.2hp 50.00 So far the best deal IMO is Gavin's folder. That little cutie needs a home with someone that'll let it out to play.
  15. Saweet! Hey, is that the old indian that use to cry about the trash along the roads ? How's he doin' these days?
  16. If you're on a bite that works with nice laid-back lazy strips then yeah a basket would be cool I guess.....but usually I am stripping like I'm trying to start a 30 year old chainsaw with bad gas, and in that case trying to make sure that all those yanks end up neatly in the basket is like swatting bees.
  17. Correct, with one addition..... there may be a "foil" shroud around the center wire insulator that needs to be grounded also. That foil is a 2-ply shroud that is a conductor on one side and a non-conductor on the other. It needs to maintain continuity with the opposing piece. This sounds more complicated than it is.
  18. Yeah I'm sure there's someone close to you that can do a good splice. Just have them seal it with liquid tape and shrink boot. If nothing else you could proposition one of the AT&T guys the next time you see a service truck working on a line or pedestal. Just grab one of his cones and hold it ransom, he'll do a pretty splice for ya.
  19. Somewhere (probably on ebay) there is a set of 12'' diameter Googly eyes. I'm buying them and epoxying them to your canoe Dave, yeah it's the craft foam sheets like they sell at Wal-mart.
  20. No dissin', Lancer....but a stripping basket is just one more thing to get line tangled around. I know several guys that own them, some bought, others homemade, but nobody uses them after the first time trying, myself included.
  21. Those are cool. Local dealer has one in it's original wooden Elto treasure box. I have an old 1967 3hp, and a 195? Weedless 4hp, and a 1972 6hp. None of which I personally would want on a canoe....but that's just me. I'd either go with a 12v TM or snatch up that old folder from Gavin. None of those old "little" motors ever really got used much so an old one is as good as a new one if you just refresh the hoses and stuff. Plus, the old ones are built SO much better than the new ones.
  22. I would be happy to....but sadly it would probably cost you as much in fuel to get it here as it would to replace the transducer/harness assembly. I am in Gravois mills.
  23. I believe the big 2 are still Brunswick and Genmar.
  24. Have spliced many of them, never a problem. It's just coax that may or may not have a temp sender wire in the harness, nothing mysterious.
  25. Well there's obviously something wrong with those people. I'd keep a close eye on 'em. They aint right.
