  1. I typically find oysters from September through the end of October while out squirrel hunting or early season archery. Chicken mushrooms are really simple to ID. So I try to find those. Not a strong mushroom flavor, but stay meaty. I like them as a chicken substitute for fettucine alfredo. I have access to a property that has both Bearded and comb tooth mushrooms. Both show up sporadically. They both have mild flavor if picked early after they emerge. Once the bearded tooth fungus start to yellow they are bitter. Anyone find any black chanterelles (trumpets)? I found some on public ground many years ago and have not found a patch recently. Since they are very thin, I like to dry them and add the pieces/powder to soups or stews. They have a real good mushroom flavor.
  2. Jerry, What have you been using when you have caught them? I would love to catch one. They look like a pretty cool little fish.
  3. My daughter and I finally got out to a spot to hunt for the chanterelles last week. We found a couple of dozen, but that pales in comparison to what everyone else on this thread is finding. We did use them in a white wine sauce and put that over venison backstrap medallions.
  4. Good Luck. Post pictures when you land it. I want to get down there, but with my family going out of town next week I'm sure to have a large honey-do list.
  5. Haris - It all depends upon how appreciative your girlfriend may be after catching more and bigger fish than you did. I don't mind my wife catching bigger fish, because it keeps her interested in fishing and thus we (I) get to go more frequently. I've been known to fish "less intensively" if she is giving me a hard time about how much she is enjoying beating my buns in numbers or size of fish. It's been working so far after 30 yrs. of being together.
  6. Seth was that your shirt he used as a cutting board to filet those trout?
  7. That's a great fish!
  8. Last year when I was fishing most of the trout waters in Missouri, I was most disappointed in the white ribbon section of the Current river below Cedar grove. The crowds were one issue. There were people in most areas that should have held fish. However, you can put in the work and get beyond the crowds. So what really bothered me was the lack of fish life in the river. I understand that as a white ribbon section this is a everything goes type of fishery for trout, but I wasn't even seeing many suckers or minnows in most of the holes and stretches that I fished. I hardly had any follows from any kind of fish. I did end up catching a stoneroller and one rainbow trout in 5 hours of fishing. Blue Springs Creek was difficult to fish, but at least there were fish in most places you would expect to see them. Problem for me was they typically saw me first and I saw them as they were swimming away. I still caught a fair number of minnows and one nice rainbow in about the same amount of time I committed to the Current River. I'm sure that there are times when this section of the Current will fish better, but I really don't think that I would go back to fish that section. I catch plenty of trout and other fish in the blue ribbon section upstream. No need as Ham put it to keep beating my head against the door.
  9. Any one know how the creek is flowing today? running muddy, just high and cloudy? Any observations would be helpful. Been thinking about a trip down that way after the 4th, but want to get some opinions before making a commitment to the trip. Thanks.
  10. Glad that I got down there last weekend.
  11. Gavin let us know if the water is running high and clear or more like chocolate milk.
  12. I didn't see the photo with the hat so I didn't recognize that 2Sheds made the post. 2Sheds where are you headed next, Spring and Mill creek or did you fish those already?
  13. I picked a couple of cukes this morning. Only thing we have ready right now.
  14. Otis - welcome to the OA. I'm about 4 hours northeast of you in Columbia. So I only get down your way very infrequently. I look forward to hearing your reports.
  15. We are definitely a few weeks behind you BH. We are just getting fruit on the tomato plants and our blackberries are hard and green. My kids like to eat the tomatoes off of the vine and do that just as they are getting a red blush. I rarely ever get to eat a truly vine ripened tomato. So I am definitely jealous of a haul of ripe tomatoes like you have pictured. Also I can't blame you on the chocolate pie. Enjoy.
  16. JHK - I caught all of my fish on Sat fishing off of the Whistle bridge. I caught 6 drifting a John deere microjig about 20-24" under a small float. I know that I missed at least 2-3X that many. I really like to be able to see the fish before it takes the bait instead of relying on the float to move. What can you do with 10-12" visibility. I did catch 3 using a 1/16 oz black marabou jig and two with a 1/32 white/salmon marabou jig. I was fishing the jigs cross current and fairly fast with a lot of action then a pause. I could see the bait and any fish reaction throughout the retrieve. They all hit on the pause. We were only fishing for 4 1/2 hours with at least 1.5 hours fishing up near the spring without catching any trout. I was pretty happy with the fish we were able to catch considering the visibility issues and the high fast water.
  17. Great Report and photos. I'm jealous of your son as well. Hopefully he is hooked. Great way to spend time with family.
  18. I took my daughter to Bennett's yesterday. The water clarity was terrible, less than a foot visibility and the water was running high which is what I expected. She caught three trout and was really frustrated when she couldn't set the hook on them. However, she does enjoy catching the sculpin there. She could only catch two due to the lack of good water clarity. Sculpin fishing is a sight fishing endeavor. All in all she said she had a great day. I hope that she did. I want her to value our trips and think of them fondly when she is older.
  19. Mike - Make sure that you are able to distinguish between your fish and those of your son. When I go with my family we do that by using separate rope stringers for each angler. However, I have had more than one agent tell me it is okay to mark the fish such that you can easily tell one person's catch from the other if they are held in a common container like the bags. For example clip a notch in the tail fin for one angler and leave it intact for the other. If you are thinking about using one bag to hold your fish, check with the folks at RR to see if they will allow you to mark the fish.
  20. Tim do you think it will clean up by Friday or Saturday?
  21. Great Trip. Can't wait to hear about the next one. good luck.
  22. Nothing like catching an 18" rainbow for your first trout. Sounds like a great time Seth.
  23. Are you catching any grayling? That's a fish that I would love to catch especially the males in spawning colors.
  24. I would go with Phil's estimate. He has seen and handled many more of these big bellied browns.
  25. Did you catch any fishing around the swing sets or sliding boards. Sounds like a good time to fish unnatural habitats.
